What is needed to connect an old Inspire 5.1 sound system to a new laptop

What is needed to connect an old Inspire 5.1 sound system (at least 12 yrs old) to a two year old hp laptop. The Inspires uses the 3 prong plugs that were connected to my old computer?

Exact model numbers of both the sound system and the laptop would help. But I suppose your laptop lacks surround audio outputs, so in that case you need an external 5.1 USB sound card. This is the first hit on Az.
