What is the best IDE for C++?

I'm new to C++ programming. I need to know what is the best IDE for C++ programming. Doesn't matter whether it is a free or commercial.

I guess that depends upon what Operating System you are using - Windows, OS X, Linux, Solaris, something else?

For Windows Visual Studio is about as good as it gets. For OS X use Xcode. Both are available for free. Linux and Unix variants, it's a bit more difficult to be specific - Eclipse is probably the most universal.

Yes, on Windows Visual Studio has more features than you will probably ever use,even if you use the free 'express' version.
