I have a dell XPS M1530; I could not say much but the complete opposite, I had looked to Dell as one of the top brands before, however nowadays thanks to my XPS, I say quite the contrary here is why.

Graphics Card - Faulty - Colourful lines come up on load on a black screen 2 out of 10 times it loads.
CD Drive Optiarc - No Longer reads DVD's
Keyboard is beginning to fail.
CD Drive sounds like a plane at take off.
Battery life has diminished at an unusually rapid rate.
Hard Disk failed after 5 Months -

I now own my own retail outlet, in which due to my business partner I stock and sell Dell's
In comparison to the price tag of an XPS I expect much better.
Service is a great plus however if your laptop is your life, sending it off for repairs and paying the labour costs for it to be fixed, when the part was originally faulty from the supplier I fear is not the way things should be done.

Just like many cars, its about MODEL not BRAND>

all the brands buy systems/parts from many of the same vendors. as an example, Dell Studio,Inspiron,Lattitude,XPS, Alienware can have very different characteristics, but they are all labled " dell"

the same is true for any brand..

you need to research a model family, not brand. I find the Lattitude lines to be very reliable, whereas I have had a lot of trouble with some others.. also the support issue is about how you got it, not who labled it. I buy mine through business relationships, and all my support has ben US based.

How much did you get paid to post that. I have a Dell laptop, I love it, but it BLOWS!!!!! motherboard failed after about 3 months. I've gone through 3. 3!!! not to mention that windows just plain sucks, it lags and quits the apps before they start. I really hate Dell though, just look at their prices, unrelated, but i was lookin for a 3d tv, they were sellin one that from sears was 2k, for 2.9k. WTF!!! dell don't sell TV's. and yes there entire company was outsourced, as were most companies. it all comes down to money. laptops last a year, two tops, die, and they want you to buy another 1k laptop. just buy the warentee, and stay the HELL away from DELL!!!
P.s. i know i spelled warentee wrong :p

I know this thread is a bit old. But i had to add my two cents worth. I am currently looking for a new laptop because my Dell xps M1530 with the DEFECTIVE NVIDIA 8600 chipset quit on me a couple days ago. This laptop cost approx. $7,500.00 in my local currency and received good reviews as one of dell's high performance line of laptops. It has not even lasted three years.

This NVIDIA issue has been in the news and even in the U.S.Courts. Dell extended my warranty by 12 months due to this issue but my laptop gave up outside of the waranty period. In spite of it being an issue of Manufacturers defect Latin American help said they could only sell me a new Motherboard which with install cost will be $400. This doesn't make sense to me ($2,400.00 IN MY LOCAL CURRENCY) so im looking for a new laptop.

I'm sending this message from a Dell Dimension XPS T500 Desktop that i have had for maybe 9-10yrs. The only hardware changes i have made was to install a new cdrom. These two systems are the only ones i ever had. Both Dell. I returned to Dell for my laptop, based on my experience with this desktop. Maybe this was a mistake.

I do believe that NVIDIA is at fault in my particular situation, but that Dell should have done more service wise to assist. I didnt purchase an Nvidia laptop, but a Dell laptop. Having sold systems with defective GPUS Dell should have stepped up to protect their customers. GPU issues should be dealt with, warranty or not.

I think Sony Vaio is no angel either. Their dvd drive is frankly quite lousy. After a couple of reads (10-15) you notice that it stops reading your discs. Their BIOS is locked, so you can't change anything, like the VT-x feature. They were heavily criticied for that esp. when they sold Intel processors that supported Vt-x. If you buy in-store, make sure to check the HDD is 7200rpm, Sony still flogs 5400 or 4200 to unsuspecting customers. Their mid-range laptops has gone really plasticy, loud touchpad keys and you can feel the processor's heat on the bottom lid.

However, my current Vaio still works (4yrs). The Wifi/BT failed. I can't play any games 'coz the GPU is so bad. The screen is still crisp, which is probably why I went for it.

As for Dell laptops. I'm only told from friends that it's awful and it's cust-care is not good. Recently I was reading an article which says it required a lawsuit to get them to admit that they knowingly sold bad components and kept quiet about it. But who knows, maybe they changed now?

Lenovo (formerly IBM) -- Their Thinkpad series are expensive, really ugly but reliable. I think they should stop using the word "performance" when they still sell integrated/mid-class GPUs. Shame!

Don't know much about HP, Asus, Acer and Toshiba.

Nonsense. I have a Dell XPS M1530. The optical drive has failed twice in 18 months and Dells unwillingness to honour their warranty means I will NEVER buy another Dell as long as there are other options. Never again.

I like my monolithic IBM ThinkPad T40. Still using it today since I bought it in early 2003. Yes, it was really, really expensive; I paid $2,200 - $2,300 for a Pentium M 1.5GHz and Mobility Radeon 7500. And it was on sale too. I remember thinking real hard about buying the T40 with a Pentium M 1.6Hz and Mobility Radeon 9000 (IIRC) for around $2,700 - $2,800.

I don't really need a laptop, but I've been thinking about buying the Lenovo T410s with a SSD for around $1,700. Ah... I suppose I can dream...

I could not agree more with this thread. I work at Best Buy and these exact opinions are the reasons why people respect me as a salesperson more, and know I won't steer them wrong.

In short: Stop shopping the brand. Its the worst mistake you'll ever make in a laptop purchase.
