Normally, if an operating system is unable to find the network adapter, it is because either the installed NIC driver is corrupted or has not been installed at all.

To answer your basic question, the DNS of your laptop should be configured to obtain the address automatically as the Wi-Fi router itself works as a DHCP server that automatically provides the DNS server address (which in most cases is the IP address of the router itself).

The DNS address should be set to be automatically obtained, which is the default setting. Your issue does not sound like a DNS setting error, however.

Check Device Manager; do you have any errors in the device list? Is anything missing under Network Adapters?

Reinstall the driver for your WiFi card and, if need be, run a virus scan in Safe Mode (hold F8 before Windows starts to access the option for Safe Mode).
