I already have a TIVO HUMAX with the DVD burner.

Love it - wouldn't be without it

But because I am stuck with Comcast, I am looking to get a second unit. If
only because so many of the shows I like are on opposite each other.

Have been considering a Toshiba 400 with TIVO Basic off Ebay for about $200
as a second machine to save the monthly fee. Would just do times
recordings.

Would you go the Toshiba refurbished way or just buy an second Series 2 and
pay the $6 a month?

as a follow up question, if I did the Toshiba 400, would I be able to
network it with going premium?

I don't know why people bad mouth the "basic" service, it's free and gives you
the programming of an advanced vcr, if that's what you want. However, the
tivotogo DOES NOT work for it. I have a toshiba w. basic and another tivo w.
the full service, sitting on top of the toshiba.

Also, the TiVo basic DOES NOT include the home media option, so you would
not be able to use multi-room viewing to transfer shows from the basic TiVo
to the full-service TiVo (without hacking).

If you upgrade to the full TiVo service, you will get all the hmo features
and TiVo2Go. Mine got the service update 2 weeks ago.

Also, if memory serves my toshiba 400 was $200 from Best Buy brand new last
august. I would hope a used/refurbished one would be significantly less.
