Asus Vivobook Pro, N552NX-US51T i5-6300hq @ 256gb m.2 ssd/1tb hdd, 8gb ddr4, 2.3-3.2 ghz, gtx950m with a 3.1port and optical drive or...
Dell 15, 7559-5013GRY i7-6700hq @ 8gb data ssd/1tb hdd 8gb ddr3, 2.6-3.5 ghz, gtx960m without 3.1 port and no optical drive? Both are 4k touchscreen with 3-3.0 ports, Backlit with Windows 10 @ 64 bit. Having a difficult time deciding which is better for CAD/3D, animation/design, not so much for gaming...thank you!

Solution
For 3D at 4k res you want the one with the better GPU, which in this case is the 960m. You will also benefit from the four extra logical cores in 3D animation work and you cant do much with USB 3.1 anyway unless theres something specific you want it for.

Yeah benches like UserBenchmark will report bad scores on XMP RAM running at stock, because it reads the XMP frequency and thinks it's under-performing. It's a bit flawed really because technically it's as it should be. Am not sure about XMP on your model of laptop but will take a look at the manual. Did it come with XMP RAM do you know?

Your SSD hs a Read 530MB/s, Write 510MB/s rate so there could be something going on there. Check all the power options and that it's in Performance mode and there arent any energy or battery saving settings applied to your hard drive and system. Seq read/write speeds arent everything tho and the random speeds and latency are more important in general use.

Hey Multipack, again thanks for your help. The read and write scores are still the same and seem to be low. I've checked the power settings and I have them set to high performance so, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I can't find anything about XMP settings anywhere and am not aware if the RAM it comes with or the crucial I've added even has XMP settings available?...you think they would though. My system is also saying that I'm at 99% throttle? I'm fairly novice when it comes to system settings and performance so, don't really know the meaning of such terms and how to fix or help to reach better performance. Like I said, it seems everything is running well, just wondering if it should be running even better? So, my questions are simply...1) Should my Read and Write be higher and what steps should I take to rectify issue? 2) Should I set updates to automatic? 3) Is there a way to fix the throttling issues? 4) Do I need to set my HDD to use as storage or does it do it automatically? Honestly, Anything you can think I should be doing to make sure it performing as well as can be would be helpful? Sorry if I'm asking too much of you. I have never owned my own system and have some technical skills but, I'm not familiar with this system and what it should be doing with added SSD and RAM? HAHA! Maybe everything is as it should be and I'm being OCD. Anyway, any help would be much appreciated. Also, don't know if you watch football but, I'm from Worcester, MASS so, if your like me I know you don't want anyone bothering you during the games...Sunday football baby!

Hey bud, nah am actually from the UK so couldn't watch the football if I wanted to. I think football would be my sport if I was because I prefer rugby to soccer, which is big here as I'm sure u know.

From another look at the spec it looks like you have DDR3L RAM which should only have one 1600MHz profile so I dont think it will have any other frequency. Run CpuZ to check what speed the RAM is running at.

Do you mean the SSD or CPU is throttling? Overheating is about the only thing that causes that, so it'd be a good idea to run HWInfo64 to check component temps.

Apparently that SSD read/write speed is normal even tho the marketing has it higher.. http://www.anandtech.com/show/10274/the-crucial-mx300-750gb-ssd-review-microns-3d-nand-arrives/7

If you run UserBenchmark it'll give you a rundown on how all the parts are performing and if theres any issue. Its only natural to be a bit OCD about a system as good as yours, especially if like you say it's your first one. Thats ok.

And yeah update everything Windows, and get any Dell updates Support Asssist recommends. It will help fine tune the system.

As for storage, you choose where things are saved and installed basically. Its up to you where things go, but you can browse each of the hard drives in File Explorer. I'd put any games or CPU intensive software on the SSD obviously.

Thanks man for your prompt response during the weekend. Yeah I'd be watching me some Rugby if those were my 2 choices too. Although, Rugby isn't hugely popular here, it's still more popular than Soccer. I'm from the Boston area so, we're huge Patriots fans and have that tough, blue-collar attitude. So, the attraction for rugby will always be there. Haha! It's kinda funny, a lot of the towns and counties from Massachusetts have the very similar landscapes and names as yours...hence New England. Just a little info for ya;) Ok, back to the system! I'll run your programs and check the status afterwards. I have updated many drives, software etc. The computer is running really well actually, just wasn't sure if it should be better? You're right about the Read/Write for Crucial, it seems to be hitting proper marks. Concerning the heat issue, it was the CPU that was throttling...it doesn't seem to be anything to be concerned about. I think there's some background processes running and causing the throttling? With your knowledge and reading the forums it's been a huge help getting familiar with the system. Everytime someone asks me what I bought for a laptop I almost feel guilty for spending the amount I did. At the same time though, I wanted to make sure I had a decent system to run most programs and will not have to worry about slow, unresponsive programs and updating all the time. You've made me feel much better about the decision I've made in purchasing this Dell right from the get-go. So, thank you for that. I'll check the system with the programs you've advised me to use and get back to you later. Have a good one brother!

Ha yeah of course, New England! Didnt think of that. Despite what you see on TV this is mainly a blue-collar country too and those are my kind of people. Salt of the earth is what my grandfather used to say. The World is getting smaller tho huh!

Everyone gets those feelings about spending on new hardware, but when you look at how much the top end tech is these days it kinda puts it in perspective. A $750 laptop is a fraction of what some people are paying for top end VR ready type kit. Heck a mid-range 4k TV costs more than that. It's a good investment anyway. The more you spend on a system the more you save as it'll be able to stand its ground for much longer.

You have a look at some of those programs and see what you can see. The more you learn the more you'll be able to make sense of it all and eventually start diagnosing other peoples problems lol. Keep us posted how it goes. Anyway no probs for the feedback bud. Hope the Patriots get a good result and you have a good Sunday.

That's good to hear! Wasn't positive of what I was looking at but, beginning to get an understanding of all the terms numbers. I'll take a look at the rest of the programs. Once again, thanks. Patriots are up 17-6 late in the 2nd quarter! This game is to go to the Championship! Oh hey, should I be posting any of these as answers or is how I'm approaching this ok?

Sorry bud, am quite a few hours ahead and it was kinda late. You should've been watching the game by the sounds of it anyway!

Posting here is fine. It's easier to keep it in one place and I am tracking the thread so get notified when you reply. You may get help from others if you start new questions but its cool by me.

All things considered I think you are having a bit of a crash course in system stats but its good that you are paying attention and keen to get the best out of your new hardware. Check out some more benchmarks and post any questions I may be able to help you with any time ok.
