Hi, I know I have had a post answered before, but I have recently come across a laptop that is fighting for the role of the desktop replacement I want. This will mostly be for internet browsing, school, video editing, and some moderate gaming. These three laptops all fit my 800$ budget and have around the same specifications. The Acer Aspire AS7740g-6364, the Acer Aspire AS5740g-6979, and the HP Pavilion dv6z. All of which have the ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 1GB dedicated. Here are the links: http://us.acer.com/acer/productv.do...x1g.c2att92=447&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=4055624690]

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6zse_series] The dv6z, for my customization, has the ATI Radeon Mobility 5650, 4GB RAM, a 2.8 Ghz Dual Core Processor, a 320GB HD, and a high-capacity 6-cell battery.

Hello and welcome to the forums :)
Well the first 2 links didn't work, but i did a search and the only difference between those Acer's is the screen size.
I would go for either of the Acer models, because the HP one has a slower CPU.
And as for the 2 Acer laptops,it depends on you that you want a 15" or a 17" laptop

Thanks, but are the i5 processors really faster than the one I specified? I thought that a Core 2 Duo at 2.8 Ghz would be faster than the core i5 at 2.26 Ghz?

I have the Acer Aspire 5740G-6979 and I couldn't be happier. It can play modern games like Dragon Age: Origins, it isn't that loud, and it doesn't run so hot. The 15.6" LED widescreen looks very nice and photos look sharp.

However, there a few minor flaws that you should know about:
1. It does not have GPU switching, so you cannot switch between the HD 5650 & the Intel GMA HD.
2. There will be a loud annoying beep if you unplug/plug in the power adapter, but to solve that problem just uninstall & delete the Realtek driver in "Device Manager". Then download & install the Realtek 2.29 driver version. You can find it on Google.
3. The battery life only lasts about 2+ hours on 40-50 percent brightness. Not sure if that matters to you.
4. It has a one button function for the mouse touchpad, kind of like a see-saw effect. I prefer 2 buttons.

Those are the only flaws I have noticed with this laptop. I still recommend this laptop because you cannot find a cheaper laptop with this class of performance.

I see you are really serious gamer and you have had perfect laptop for your gaming a videos. Your graphics memory specially attracts me. Anyway, I am not a gamer and not too much video lover. I had Acer Aspire 5738z (http://www.rboffers.com/computers/a...-save-11-now-449-97-laptopsdirect-71783.html/) last month for monitoring my business monitoring online. Everything going well till now. I can't tested battery life yet though I have no need too long but I need a wide screen for multi-window action what I get from it.

I am happy yet with my Aspire.
