Which PDA/phone is best fit for Fido?

I really want to get a PDA/phone for use on Fido, but I can't figure
out which brand/model would be the best fit. I don't think that they
are all fully functional using the Fido system – from what I've read
in this group anyways... Some won't give you full email or text
messaging capabilities, some may have other limitations.

I'm talking about Treo, Blackberry, Tungsten W and any other PDA with
a GSM phone built in. I'm not really looking at the smaller "smart
phone" type models like the P900 as closely – for me it's a PDA first
and phone second.

Does anyone have any advice?

I also use a Treo 270. I think it works well. I used a Nokia 9000il
and a Visor+Visorphone before that, and I think the Treo 270 is
cheaper and works better. Treo 270 has a very old palm OS version
though, which makes it really bad when you want to install some Java
applications. (note that many exciting palm applications are written
in Java now, especially for internet access)

The GPRS wasn't as fast as I expected though, comparing to the days
when I used a Ericsson cellphone's 33.6K modem and irDa with Clie.
Authentication to GPRS takes long, and the GPRS data usage goes far
beyond what I expected too, which is bad without an unlimited plan.

I used a Treo 270 on Fido for over a year. Took it to Asia and
Australia too. Voice and data both worked fine.

I have an unlocked Treo 600 phone/PDA which I use with Fido. I am very
happy with it and have no problems recommending the Treo 600. The only
issue with the Treo 600 is the support for it (via PalmOne technical
support). PalmOne's technical support was outsourced to India I
believe and they don't know anything about the Treo 600. I downloaded
a firmware update which locked my previously unlocked phone and they
told me to do a lot of things which I knew wouldn't fix my problem. In
the end, I managed to get the necessary software to unlock my phone
again.

I would recommend any PalmOS based PDA/phone since you can get
thousands of programs for it. I used to use a Handspring Visor Prism
with the VisorPhone attachment. I would be still using it if it didn't
break when it fell on the floor.

The only issue that I have with the smartphones running on other OS's
(WindowsCE, Symbian, etc.) is that there isn't as many programs for
them as with a PalmOS smartphone.

Treos are great but they seem to be the priciest of the bunch. Has
anyone had any luck with a Blackberry? Which model?

Me too, but currently I'm on Rogers using my friend's acount. What I
found when I was on Fido, when I had a message waiting, the icon
doesn't show up ( next to the signal bars, looks like this O_O ) - but
it does on Rogers, and you can tap on the icon to get voice mail.

This is definitely a PDA first before a cell phone. I switched from a
Nokia to it and noticed the weaker capacity in catching the Fido
network. But I like it since it's Palm OS and tons of s/w available.

My unlocked Treo 600 does the exact same thing. The waiting message
indicator which as you mentioned looks like O_O shows up on Rogers but
not on Fido when I have a message waiting.
