why does my dell laptop have 3 prongs for charging port

Solution
one pin is actually a data pin that the laptop uses to communicate with the charger. This is how the laptop knows if you are using an authentic dell charger and the wattage of the charger. Knowing the wattage allows the computer to properly charge the battery as well as clocking itself slower to produce less heat/power draw if your charger can't support a higher load.
If you talking 3 prongs on the power adapter it is power, neutral, ground; just like your wall ac outlet.

I have not seen a power plug on the computer itself with 3 prongs on it.
