Why doesn't my tv get broadcast channels with digital adapter ?

Comcast will soon be charging $1.99 a month for their previously free digital adapters. I disconnected them and now both tvs aren't receiving any channels, not even broadcast channels. I thought broadcast channels were supposed to be free ? Am I stuck paying the monthly charge just to watch CBS or NBC ?

Head over to http://www.antennaweb.org/ and enter your zip code to see what digital channels should be available in your area. This assumes your TV actually has a digital (ATSC) tuner.

If I understand what I read at the above website, I would need a large directional rooftop antenna with an amp. Since this isn't possible as I live in a condo, I guess I'm stuck with the adapters. Thank you so much for your replies. Have a Happy New Year !

A large directional antenna should not be needed (please provide your zip code). A simple indoor antenna should provide you with the local channels you desire.
