I just spoke to Mark Rein. The problem isn't the varied hardware but the 50 MB size limit for apps. Google plans to loosen that restriction and Epic will port Infinity Blade over at that time.

Google hasn't announced exactly when they'll do that so Epic can't make any solid plans yet on the Android port.

Someone said Crysis had OK graphic. Are you kidding me? Crysis had and has the best graphic and it was well programmed. It was ahead of everything and runs great on most PCs today, something which cannot be run by crappola PS3, XBOX360 and iPad2

Do you guys realize how inferior Android and Apple devices are compare to even low end PC. Wanna be ultimate gaming platform -> have news for ya aint going to happen on your mobile/tablet device.

All the comments complaining that Epic should "hire better talent", or should figure out how to write a "scalabe graphics engine" just confirms what I've noticed all along on Tom's - that there are very few people on here who know anything about programming.

Those of us who actually are software engineers (as opposed to the fakes who post here) understand exactly what Epic is saying and they are 100% correct.

Too bad your hate for Apple is so strong that you can't even think straight use use basic logic. But then again, emotions seem to trump logic in most situations anyway, so the haters response is expected.

I am not going to comment Apple tablet and movile device but their laptops and desktops are nothing but PC with MacOS installed. Apple doesn't make a shit in that market segment, but they buy PC components and they put together in their case and slap logo on it. Gaming will never take place on MacOS because they lack API, and openGL is way behind DirectX. Market will never switch from DirectX to some iX crap just because Apple name is behind it.

Speaking of gaming on Mobile/Tablet devices. It can do so much which compared to modern PC is a joke.

awww are all you apple haters butt hurt? yeaaah i think you are. awwwww.

"epic won't make games for my xoom so i'm gonna fold my arms and be mad! hmmpfff!!!"

tom's hardware attracts the biggest, fattest whiners.

Amazing how many of these comments just immediately blame Epic, what would you do in their place, develop software for a fragmented, difficult to program, and non-proven platform (in regards to earning developers money) or to a mature, stable, consistent, and popular ecosystem like iOS. It's not like they're doing something different than 99% of the other developers out there. Hey, l love the idea of Android as much as anyone, but some of you people need to get your heads out of Google's ass, 😉

Ok, I admit I only skimmed the article. However, what caught my eye was that Epic likes Apple for introducing new hardware yearly so their engine can progress on the platform instead of being locked into a limit for 7-8yrs. The article states this is much like PCs as far as frequent hardware upgrades being possible.

HEY EPIC !! The reason you gave for liking apple is the same reason PC should be your #1 platform of choice, you know, the PC platform you cut your teeth on? If you want tech that will really let your engines stretch their legs and keep innovation going in hardware then start fully supporting PC again not porting things to it but rather porting to the consoles from a ground-built PC game !

Wow it amazes me (ok not so much) that they are saying this openly when that is the best thng about gaming on the PC or at least used to be before every dev decided PC should take a back seat. Epic you helped create this situation of stagnation when you started releasing only on console there for a while, if console devs see the big names are willing to cut down their engines to perform on their console what motivation do they have to bring out a new console every 4-5 yrs like it used to be? Exactly, they have no motivation for it because you will cater to their whim and only toss PC gamers a cookie now and then. Well now quitchabitchin' you helped create the beast you are now complaining about.

I am not angry in writing this as in text it might come off that way but c'mon, it's so obvious this is nearly hypocritical.

It;s not backwards thinking at all. Look what Crysis 1 (and 2) do to the hardware industry. Video cards, CPU's, Ram, all of them want to reach the performance to make people happy(so they buy their products, no other reason). I JUST bought a GTX 460 (768mb) and I gave up on GPU's back in the 7400 days, because too many things changed too quickly. Now that I finally purchased a reasonably prices hardware (which runs Crysis 1 (and 2) very well) sotware sales will go up because of me. Demand provided by software manufactures (like the Unreal engine or the CryEngine) lead to demand for better hardware and a reasonable price.

I think this is more about DRM and less about “fragmentation”, the same thing that’s keeping NetFlix from making an Android app. Android is too open for most big developers to consider spending money on. Piracy is rampant in the PC world (always has been really) and Android is having that problem as well.

I love these threads all the fanboys come out and shake their epeens at one another.

The benefits of creating games for iOS over the android is pretty huge right now. There is many many more iPads out there and tablet gaming is a much more enjoyable prospect then phone gaming and as such its more to build a game designed for a 10 inch screen then for a 4inch screen, you can do a lot more. The new iPad 2 has significantly better hardware; Tegra 2 was a bust. There is only going to be 2 tablets and 1 Phone your game will have to run on right now for iOS; while for Android you would have to get your game running on what a half dozen tablets and a couple dozen phones, with 4-5 different SOCs in them.

The advantages for building the game for android would be? Its not cheaper, its not easier, its not going to reach more customers, the hardware is worse for tablets... Where is the advantage?

Butthurt Android fanboys crying about Epic. If the article said "Why Epic Loves Androids and Dislikes Apple iOS," people would be commenting about how great Epic is.

[citation][nom]Anomalyx[/nom]You forgot to add "and we can be lazy and get away with making apps that older generation hardware can't handle".One of my biggest pet peeves[/citation]

Obviously you have no understanding of the costs to develop software. The point has been made here that it costs money to develop for different hardware configurations, and to make them backward compatible is even more costly. Portables are the wave of the future and there will come a time where gaming on PC stand alone will be much like LP's...a unique audience and pricey.

It is ironic how much Apple has been trashed in the past for having limited hardware configurations, yet it is now what the developers want to reduce their development costs. Sadly the PC is dying a slow death.

Seems I need to repeat myself here.

All that these developers need to do is focus on Google Nexus products, period. So easy.

Then consumers and corporations will have a standard for their expectations. Why blame Android for your choice of cheesy hardware.

Google should even launch a Nexus equivalent certification program like Dolby and THX do for Home A/V or Microsoft does for Windows.

pretty much like why would you want to play unreal in your ipad if you could do it in your computer 100 times more faster and more accurate in shooting. oh. maybe it feels cool to play unreal at your ipad 2 even thought you got rap and kill hundred times pre game. nice. I would like to play unreal with any ipad user online. 1 vs 100. oh if you lucky enough you may get a usb jack for your next ipad 3 so you can at least have a 1 bottom mac mouse to play your shooting game.

Perhaps if they offer in the future proper gaming controls like a game pad or a keyboard, but that would defeat the purpose of a gaming tablet. And this is the reason I don't care if Epic develops for iOS or Android or WP7, because I will never game on a tablet with the exception of casual games for passing small amounts of time. For those games UE is useless.
