Why there is so much fuss about notched display?

Right after iPhone X presented a notch in its display, now each new android smartphone is coming with notched display.

I personally think that notch is a horrible idea then why companies are opting for it. Asus presented Zenfone 5 series with such design. Just now several leaks suggested that OnePlus 6 will come up with notched display.

I have read somewhere that Apple engineers invented notch when they failed to hide fingerprint sensor under the display. Is it correct?
What you people think about the notched display?

Apple is known for creating trends and companies just follows the trend. Asus says that we have to manufacture what customers are demanding. It can be the one answer to this question. Answered myself.
