Six months for crucial security patches? I guess for apple that's an improvement in response time but still really dang slow.

I agree. People complain a lot about all the security flaws in Windows, and Apple usere boast about how secure their OS apparently is....? or at least thats what the salesman told them. Windows is continuously getting patched, and quite quickly, I personally feel its at least as secure, if not more, its just unfortunate that it is more popular and is therefore targeted more.

First, people don't usually 'Choose' Windows. It is what every computer Dell sells, it is what you get if you don't buy an Apple computer. Does Lenovo offer OS X? So it is not a 'choice'. It is ironic that you have to buy an Apple computer to have a choice, between Windows or OS X.

Keep telling yourself that Windows is more 'popular', the reality is it is simply necessary if you are going to use that Dell or Lenovo computer.

Windows is less secure because the user base is less educated, less knowledgeable, and trained to click 'Okay' as standard procedure to use their computer like a trained monkey! So when a important box pops up, people don't read them! They just blindly click 'Okay'. Bill Gates apparently never heard the 'cry wolf' story.

You are a special breed no ? Do you even hear what comes out of your mouth (well.. finger tips) ?

Apple is responsible for osx not being available on those computers. With non-apple products users have the choice of switching to Linux or dual booting with it, but because so few do, manufacturers and retailers don't offer it often since they want to make their products as likely to sell as possible. And while it is true that there are less educated users among all os's, the most educated can use them all. It is Apple that has the consumption (IE tv) oriented ecosystem and corresponding userbase.

Do Apple users really think they are better educated than Windows users? Apple's operating systems are the most dumbed down and locked down software out there. They don't even think you are capable of changing your own battery. One mouse button? They market to idiots. Apple thinks you are retarded, and for the most part, they are right.

While I don't think six months is an acceptable timetable for patching a flaw of this magnitude, I also don't think this issue really says much about the Windows/Mac debate in general. Both systems have enormous user bases, and as such, both are attractive targets for cybercriminals. As such, neither one is going to be totally safe, and users must protect themselves as best they can.

Actually this is incorrect, you CAN order Dell PCs with Linux, or no OS at all. What you CANNOT do is order a Mac legitimately with Windows on it.

Windows is less secure because the user base is less educated, less knowledgeable...

I have heard this before from the occasional Mac user, yet I find it perplexing because you'll never see an article like the one below this that explains how to buy a Windows-based product. Apparently it's gotten so bad now that Apple users need step-by-step directions from Apple in order to survive.

On a serious and factual note, the notion that Apple consumers are more educated was objectively disspelled a couple years ago. They actually found that the iPhone was most popular among middle school and early high school kids, and 34-50 year old stay at home mothers. Android, and surprisingly, Blackberry dominated the professional sector.

Real men need instructions on how to order products and update their computers. Real men choose Apple. Choose to have choice replaced with direction, choose Apple Computers.

Please note: we don't delete "negative Apple comments". Honestly, we couldn't care less which side our readers support. However, when you insult our site, when you insult our writers, then we can and will remove all such comments as they add absolutely nothing to the discussion and, quite frankly, are incredibly rude. Read our ToU and Rules of Conduct.

Your veiled attempts to disguise your loathing of users of Windows and to position yourself as a superior human have failed miserably along with your patent lack of understanding as to why Windows is more vulnerable to malicious attack than OS X.

It's simple math you ego maniac. According to the best available estimates Mac OX and variants account for 7.28% of the installed desktop market share. While Windows variants account for 91.22% of the installed desktop market share according to Gartner.

There is a common saying for prey, safety in numbers which tends to be true for those that are not eaten. However when it comes to dedicating time and energy to creating and performing malicious acts it makes sense to dedicate ones efforts towards an installed base with greater numbers to increase the odds of success. The larger the installed base the greater chance one has to find a system that is not current on the latest security updates.

I won't hold you up any further educating you as you already believe you know it all anyway and besides you're late on ordering your Iwatch.

Congratulations, you just described the majority of Mac users' common sense computing knowledge. There's a classic saying called PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard & Chair) and mst Mac users cannot be bothered to learn anything technology-related (unless it's an Apple product; then they're experts all of a sudden). Mac users click "ok" all the time and OSX dumbs down its security via obscurity. Quit making it sound like Apple's sh*t don't stink as Mac trojans and infections are not uncommon (caused by inept and ignorant Mactards).

Nice job Apple. You obviously care so much for your customers, well at least the ones who bone up the cash for your latest and not so greatest OS. The big bad terrible Microsoft was still releasing security updates for the 13 yr old, 3 1/2 generation dated XP when this security breach was found in OSX... But ya know, Windows products are so prone...
