This Intel's webpage tells that my chipset supports 4GB of RAM. This Crucial.com scan tells me that my system supports 4GB of RAM and dual-channel. CPU-Z also states that my system supports dual-channel. This post and this one are also interesting.

I wanted to buy Kingston ValueRAM 1x2GB and leave 512MB (Samsung or PQI) so it would total 2560MB of RAM. But what if they are not compatible? What if i will not get dual-channel? Maybe i should remove old 2x512MB modules and buy Kingston ValueRAM 2x2GB so that they both will be compatible and i will get dual-channel? Maybe i should buy Kingston 2x2GB in KIT?

Not all 4GB of RAM will be used, i know. But if dual-channel still will only work with 2x2GB then i am okay with that.

no your laptop maxes at 2gb

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00706103&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

the config you want to use wont work since you cant put a 2gb sodimm in your box but you can mix and match manufacturers as long as the ram is the right type... all sodimms will run at the speed of the slowest dimm though. So dont go buying a highspeed stick for your new one expecting everything to run at that speed... unless you manually overclock it in bios of course.

HP in Israel say that mostly such model does not have problems working with 3GB of RAM and bottom line is my model will work with 3GB of RAM and i can have 2GB in 1 slot.

However HP in USA tell the opposite and that 1 memory slot cannot work with 2GB of RAM.

Here is HP USA recent reply:

Actually, that setup will work, but HP does not recommend it. Certain issue may arise.

Any idea what issues may arise?

Yea! It did!

I bought 2GB of Kingston RAM, took away old 512MB Samsung module and left 512MB PQI module with new Kingston module and it worked! Samsung was the module which came originally with my laptop but i took it out because of the last different timing which is probably not that important, but i just wanted maximum compatibility. Now my laptop is smooth again! I guess i was a little sceptical and stubborn to do this earlier.

Question remains however is:

How can 2 modules with different capacities work in dual-channel mode? Maybe 2GB module works with itself in dual-channel but only with 512MB of capacity and the rest is single channel?
