No I cant get a desktop before anyone asks :p I need a laptop for uni and I will be moving back and forth at weekends so portability is essential. Also, I opted for the GTX 580M, however can someone please confirm for me that it DEFINITELY performs better than the Radeon HD 6990M? (Even if by just a little bit). Anyway I was hoping for near to max settings on games like BF3, Skyrim, Starcraft 2 etc. Here are the specs:

Chassis & Display
Vortex II:17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2670QM (2.20GHz) 6MB

Memory (RAM)
8GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB)

Graphics Card
2.0GB nVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M - DirectX® 11 (17.3" Vortex II)

Memory - Hard Disk
750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKT, SATA 3 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

Operating System
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Thanks.

GTX 580M is slightly better than the Radeon HD 6990M in most (but not all) games.
Right now it's, overall, the best single laptop GPU available.
You should be able to play most games in 'near max settings'

It can't even max Skyrim with good fps? WTF. That's bullshit. It's the best single card GPU for laptop there is. I shall live in hope that it WILL be able to max Skyrim.

you have no chance at having playable frame rates with everything maxed out in skyrim. you must not be up to date with skyrim lol. it LOVES fast cpus and your cpu is going to be about half the speed it needs to be to max frame rates(about 4.0 ghz). i just lowered my clock speed to 2.5 and maxed out everything in skyrim and get about 25 fps average and saw dips into single digits and gpu usage of 75 percent meaning the gpu is waiting on the cpu. sorry man you need a better cpu for skyrim.

for battlefield you might still need a better cpu. as much as benchmarks say otherwise BF3 multi player needs a fast quad core unlike the single player benchmarks you keep seeing.

You just have to realize that you are buying a laptop and with that comes sacrifices.

also i dont believe notebookcheck.net for their accuracy for skyrims average fps for ultra settings. i got 25fps at 2.5 ghz and they got 35 fps at 2.0 ghz. i can see that out in the open but not in any of the cities.

anything over a desktop 6870(6990m) will max the game no problem its the cpu that limiting skyrim at ultra settings.

i still stand by the fact that the 580m will get worse fps online with a low clocked i7 in BF3.
