[citation][nom]need4speeds[/nom]Think about it for a moment, when the first season of star trek was filmed. All of this technology, was only a dream back then. The biggest thing at the time, expensive like a iphone or handheld gaming unit, used leading edge technology at the time was a battery powered transistor radio. Most would boast how many it had in it and print it on the radio something like "9 transistor radio". Stereo was also new and expensive. And color tv's were as expensive as today's 65" lcd tv's (in today's dollars). Except for the transporter (actually research is being done on that and they claim to have transported a few single atoms (proving Steven Hawking's theory ), warp drive(the physics and concept has been laid out by Steven Hawking),Time travel (Steven Hawking says it's possible actually),alternate universes or worlds (Steven Hawking again), basically every device that was dreamed of and used in star trek is now for sale and you can buy one in a store somewhere or the military has one. Even when Steven Hawking tries to explain his theory's in simple terms, I still don't get it. -handheld medical scanners (handheld mri's)-handheld communication device (cell phones)-handheld computers (smart phones and laptops)-tiny speakers/mic (blue tooth headsets)-flat screens (lcd's)-talking computers (voice recognition and text to speech)-computer a.i. (almost there)-computer knowledge bank (modern search engines and the internet)-phazers (high powered lazers)-guided heat seeking missiles (cruise missiles)-gps -3d medical imaging (cat scans and mri's)-implants to restore sight and sound, limbs and mobility (still primitive today but progress is being made)-spacestation-drone airplanes-hubble telescope-computers with color 3d graphics (i think that one has been covered, lol.)-plasma drive (controlled nuclear fission) (still working on that, the holy grail of energy)-Captain's log stardate 070023 (send a email or tweet to the crew that i will be out on a away mission for a while) The list goes on and on. No tv show or movie predicted more things that came true than this series, ever. Without William Shatner and the star trek cast and crew dreaming up these things to later to be made, maybe google and google+ would not even exist today.[/citation]

i actually understand most of the concepts that he talks about. but time travel is a can of worms you never really want to open. because there are a few ways it can play out.

the first would be you cant change anything, as in you get a gun, and try to kill your parents before they have you, if the gun cant or wont fire, than you have the answer. at this point, everything in the world is prediturmend, that would be the most depressing thing ever. than there is also the though that if time travel does exist, it may not be our universe you travel to, but one that is the complete same as ours, only you presences is there again at a different time.

but more to the topic, crediting startrek with anything like that is complete bs. as those ideas would be there whether it existed or not, however the show probably inspired some people to go into those fields of research.

well, lets face facts. all social medium has been fads so far.
the croud that uses them move from site to site, picking up more people along the way, but generally they all fade out of existence at some point.

google+ so far i have one friend using it, and we did that hangout thing last night, its a great idea and simple to use. i use it as a communications tool right now.
it shouldn't spam like facebook, and that was my BIGGEST problem with facebook.

and question, anyone know how to get the hangout thing installed on xp? it wont see that im the administrator and i cant get passed it, had to use my laptop and i hate that damn thing.

Things tend to break because they don't evolve, though. MySpace is a classic example of a social network that never evolved - it never changed with the times and Facebook offered something genuinely better. Same goes for poor old Bebo.

Google+ isn't offering anything that Facebook isn't. You can't just expect close to a billion people to ditch something that isn't broken. It just won't happen. It's the same reason why no video sharing website has come close to YouTube, and the same reason Bing will never completely de-throne Google.

Stability of the Google platform is a start. Facebook has more bugs with its fundamental features (like chat) than a New York hotel. The fact that Google already has so many other applications like a productivity suite (Google Docs) and a solid email system (gmail) as well as their own voice network (Google Voice) and chat system (Google talk)... And even a mobile phone platform (Android) not to mention a potential OS (Chrome)... They just need a way to bring it all together in a social format to pry people away from Facebook... If they offer at LEAST what Facebook does in terms of 3rd party apps.

Google can't leverage their own mobile phone platform to make some kind of superior social network. What would happen to everyone who doesn't use an Android handset? The whole idea of social networks is that the WEB is the platform. Nothing else should matter. I certainly don't log onto Facebook and wish that I could share word processor documents and spreadsheets with my friends.

Google doesn't need to make Circles exclusive to Chrome/Android to leverage their platform. All they have to do is add some additional functionality to Android to make it worth users' while when making a decision to purchase a phone/use a browser.

For example, I have almost every Google BlackBerry app. However, when I see just how much better Google Maps works on my brother's Virgin LG Optimus V than my BB, because of the turn-by-turn navigation (that behaves much like a free lifetime automatically updating Garmin GPS), I realize that 'killer app difference' that is minute, but tangible, is a big reason my next smart phone may be an Android...

All Google needs to do is, for example, integrate video chat with Google Circles, but exclude that integration on iPhone/BB/WP7, and all of a sudden there is an incentive to switch...

its just social networking. nobody fking cares. if you had real friends you would have their cellphone number anyways.

True the writers of the show would have borrowed stuff from things being researched as well, read lots of science magazines for ideas, but i am sure making them well known inspired many. It also got people more interested in technology.

Aparently the Borg collective thought it was a bad idea!
"Resistence is not futile! You will not be assimilated!"

Gotta love Shatner

That argument is so full of holes I'm not even going to argue against it.

Needless to say that plenty of people *do* "fkin care", and that I (like many) have a healthy social life both offline and online, thank you very much.

[citation][nom]GNCD[/nom]Googled for it too. Damn...80 friggins years old. He looks 60 or 70 at most. He looked 30ish when he was in Star Trek. How the hell...?[/citation]

i'm 26 and look something like 18.... it sucks... for now...

It didn't help that he put his employer details as "United Federation of Planets" and included "pulling sexy aliens" and "fighting with klingons" in his interests...
