Windows Drops Below 90-Percent Market Share

This survey is completely misleading. For one they include smart phone operating systems... except for Windows Mobile. And I'm sure the chart would look alot different if servers were taken into account.

I really get tired of people dishing on PCs saying that MAC is better. Apple significantly overcharges for ALL of their products. Just take a look at the price on MacBooks and then take a look at the prices for a Windows laptop with comparable features. The MacBook ends up costing about 1.5X-2X as much as the comparable PC. OSX is nothing more than a polished *NIX that's locked down to only run on "approved", ie overpriced, hardware. Windows and Linux OTOH can run on any PC compatible system, which unfortunately can cause problems when OEMs like dell, HP, and acer build cheap-crappy lowend systems and that's what tarnishes the image of the PC, OEMs that cut corners to offer dirt-cheap PCs. But with that said at least with PCs you can open up your computer to repair it yourself. I don't see PC vendors spending $$$ patenting screws and screw drivers just to keep customers out of the product they PAID for.

I do occasionally need Windows-specific software... Yeah, no big deal. iTunes (for my iPod touch) is a 2 GB .vdi file with TinyXP installed, themed accordingly (Apple-ish). For Word/Excel 2010, Adobe Acrobat Pro, printer drivers, etc, I have a 5 GB .vdi file. VirtualBox, baby ! All the way. All without dual booting. Out of 2 GB of RAM, Tiny XP is set to use only 512 MB and couldn't be happier. It's enough to edit 600 dpi photos.

Only two games I play are Open Arena (Linux native game, incredibly fun Quake III clone) and Counter-Strike 1.6 via Steam (via a project called "PlayOnLinux", which is based on Wine). If I was a gamer I would probably set up a 50 GB NTFS partition with Windows 7 Home x64 and EXT4 everything else.

First off, your wrong.

Secondly, lets look at this:

Users that know how to use more than one operating system based on their main OS choice:
Windows: 10%
Mac: 95%
Linux: 100%

I have NEVER encountered a Mac user that has not been able to use a Windows machine. But if I put a different OS in front of most Windows users, they look at me with the "oh noes wur is the start menus!" Shortly after their puzzled look they turn to me and ask how to get on the internet.

Doom and gloom...windows is dead...blah blah blah...what the 2nd explosion of Win 7 penetration, when the service pack hits, and as companies are finally beginning to really shift into upgrading their OS. The US government for one, might be a boost!

Because they are idiots who do not know how to use or maintain a windows computer properly.
only reasons macs are more stable is the limited hardware compatibility they need because of the locked in hardware.
most windows crash's are caused by 3 things and very rarely is it windows itself.
1. poor drivers
2. user error - virus/malware
3. poor software - especially the shitware that is pre installed on pre made pc's.

and very rarely unless your very unlucky is it bad hardware. the whole made of high end parts in macs is rubbish since you rarely need that level of reliable parts for the sort
s of work you will be doing. usually only servers that run under high load day in and out do.

I for one don't think that iOS should be included in this at all. It should be in its own, separate "net OS" section.

mac OSx is basically from BSD not Linux
I know of a boss who would not recruit anyone who could ONLY use a mac. By implications that person must be "less intelligent" - according to him.
