Wizard Fails, Won't Go Away

After cleaning a trojan from my neighbor's Dell D530 laptop, I have a new problem. When the system is first powered up, it reports new hardware found, and tries to install drivers for the Touchpad. Installation fails. Touchpad works fine. Finish. Device Manager calls it an "Unknown Device". Try to update the driver with most recent driver from Dell's site. Says I'm updating to the same version. OK. Update thinks a minute, then fails. Uninstall the device, reboot. No change, back to the Found New Hardware Wizard. Same result.

System works fine whether I dismiss the Wizard or not. Just an anoyance and the knowledge that something's not right.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.
