Hi.

Newbie question ...

What's the difference between "Work" and "Internet" related to WLAN
setup of my iPAQ (WM2003)?

As I understand it, it affects how the PPC handles addresses, since most
internet addresses are dotted, and internal corporate ones mostly are not.
Most folks seem to work effectively by setting things to 'work' and going to
the proxy screen and checking the 'this network connects to the internet'
box, but not filling any proxy info in. I understand that this isn't a
viable solution if you actually want to VPN into a corporate network from an
external location. In that case I think you need to be in 'internet' because
the VPN functionality doesn't function in 'work'.

It has always been one of the great mysteries of PPC networking.

I did exactly what you described above, but the "this network connects
to the Internet" button doesn't remain on if I leave the screen. Hence,
I cannot connect to the Internet while using Work.

Indeed.

To summarize ... if I use "Work", I can access my shares but I cannot
access Internet. If I use "Internet", it's the other way round.

Why the **** can't I do both together, access the Internet and my shares?

I believe that the option "Requires the user to check the option ..." is
related to the Proxy settings, like Sven described it in the previous
post, but as I said, this option doesn't remain on for some reason (WM2003).

Any ideas?

Yeah, I have seen others complain about this. When you make the change in the Connection Manager are
you backing all the way out first, ie. make the change then tap Ok until you exit the Connection
Manager completely? That seems to be the key, at least for some folks...including doing a soft reset
immediately afterwards...

I tried evey possible combination. I left the button activated and made
a soft reset, I went back (using "OK") until I left the Connection
Manager completely ... nothing made the button stay on. As sson as
entering the Connection Manager / Proxy settings, it was off again !

Well, a hard reset may be in order. Its been known to fix all kind of flaky problems with these
devices...

At work I need to access the internet through a proxy server. At home I
don't. My pocketPC settings refelect this - so at home my PPC connects
transparently to my home wireless network and when at work it connects to the
network there and uses the proxy. I don't need to do anything at all.

The only time I need to manually select a network is when I want to connect to
the Internet through my mobile phone & GPRS. In this case I select 'Bluetooth'
instead of 'Home'.

It doesn't take much setting up. The first time my PPC discovered my work
wireless network it allowed me to tell it it was 'work' and asked for the
authentication code. I then entered the proxy details and it was plain sailing
from there on.

Are you also able to to access shares at the same time on both places?

My issue slightly differs from yours. I only need to connect at home
(WLAN, no proxy or VPN), but I need access to the shares simultaniously
as I do need access to the Internet.

At this time, I need to change from Work to Internet in order to achieve
this. My goal is to do it without changing anything within my PPC settings.

I tried a hard reset as well. It didn't work. I still cannot select
"This network connects to the Internet" (within the "Set up my proxy
server").

There must be something I am missing here.

Once again, the question is related to WM2003.

Any help would be appreciated!

This behaviour exists on my 5550 as well, you can't change the settings
because they revert to the previous settings as soon as you exit the
settings pages, making it impossible to set your preferences.
this also happens after hard resetting without restoring any applications.
I've not managed to get around it myself, I just set up my connection
and then leave it like that and never touch the configuration. it seemed
to work ok like that till recently when I added a D-Link 604 broadband
router to my network. now I have garbled IP addresses on my iPAQ because
DHCP is broken when using WLAN.

I think that if you change this setting and press the X button many times,
until you go back to the Connections page, the change you have made will
stick. This is what happens in my device. It is a little uncomfortable to
have to make the changes one-by-one, but it does work.

I just noticed that two nights ago too.. how peculiar!

I don't touch Bluetooth anymore either once it's set up, it fails to
remember my preferences regarding security and encryption anyway
once I turn the radio off or soft reset.

I avoid unwanted changes by first setting up Bluetooth and then
Wireless LAN. after that, I never touch it again until it breaks.
a lot of work on a PPC for things that can seem so simple on a desktop
computer. some day it'll be fixed. right?

In addition to what I said about the Bluetooth settings not sticking, I just
tracked the cause down. it's Spb Pocket Plus (version 1.3.0. Build 59).

Hitting send too fast can cause headaches later

I meant to say, Spb Pocket Plus's -close button- function.
if you turn it off (the X becomes the default minimize again) then the
settings in the BT manager stick. when on, you lose them on the next
soft reset or BT radio toggle.
