WPA from PocketPC

I just upgraded the firmware on my iPAQ 4150 in order to get the new WPA
wireless security functionality. However, the WPA settings in the PocketPC
interface seem confusing, and do not match the WPA settings on my Actiontec
DSL router/WAP very closely. I plan to pursue the issue with Microsoft and
Qwest/Actiontec support resources, but has anyone here messed with WPA on
PocketPC already?

TIA,
Joel

Yep...I use WPA-PSK (TKIP) with my iPAQ 5555 and a Buffalo WBR-G54 wireless access point/broadband
router. It works very well...

Same here, I use WPA-(radius backend) TKIP with my 4150,4350 and 5555 and it
works very well. Which settings are not matching up in your configuration.

Gentlemen,

I assume that "Network Name" on the PDA is the same thing as "ESSID" on the
router.

I have "Connect to" set to "The Internet," not "Work" (not sure what the
implications of this are, but I'm guessing that's right).

The "ad-hoc" setting is grayed out.

One of the things that was confusing to me was that I could not turn of
802.1x, but I have since been informed that that doesn't matter -- if you
are not using 802.1x, it does not mess things up to have it enabled on the
PDA.

The router makes no mention of "TKIP," but since you are both using that,
I'll assume it's correct.

My guess is that "Key index" is the same as what my router calls "Channel"
(available settings 1-11). "Key index" on the PDA is grayed out, so I have
set my router back to 1.

So, the only other setting is the key.

If that all sounds right to you, I will go back and try it again. I have
learned that when I save settings on my router, the DHCP server doesn't
always (ever?) come back up and I have to cycle the power. It's possible
that that is what was messing me up on the last round. Assuming the DHCP
server provides DNS settings, I shouldn't have to change the PDA from its
defaults, should I?

One last question: do you guys suppress your beacon on the WAP, and does
that work fine with the PDA? Once I have everything else working, I would
like to turn off the beacon.

Thanks for your input!

Joel

Joel,

Here are the pertinent configuration screens on both my Buffalo access point and my iPAQ 5555. Since
I am strictly a home user, I don't use a Radius server like Eric does...

http://members.cox.net/ajarvi/WM2003/WPA_Configuration/WPA-Configuration.html

The key your talking about is the WEP key and has nothing to do with the broadcast channel the
access point radio transmits on...That, the broadcast channel, is controlled from the access point.
The WPA key must match the key on the access point.

IMHO, you cause yourself more trouble than its worth if you disable the transmission of the
ESSID/SSID. There are tools out there that can pickup the ESSID/SSID even if it is being cloaked...
Use WPA with a LONG RANDOM key, larger than 20 characters in length...

You can see a nice explanation of the "Connection Manager" and the "Work versus Internet" settings
at...

http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/connectionmanager.htm

My WM 2003 OS Connection Manager page...

Joel,
I would follow the links that Al posted since my setup is sightly
different (the radius server provides the key for me).

Thanks for your help, all of you. Your feedback sounds excellent, is
extremely thorough, and armed with it I now have little doubt that I'll be
able to get this thing up shortly! I really appreciate you taking the time
to help out.

Ad-hoc mode is to do with connecting one machine directly to another,
without an intermediate access point. You can enable this by using the
'Rendezvous' protocol on your PPC. This is a way of 'discovering'
other network services without knowing about them in advance.

Currently there are very few known PPC rendezvous applications. They
can help in shared printer discovery if the PC operating the printer
runs the rendezvous client program. An example is here

http://www.atmasphere.net/wp/archives/2004/06/02/pocket-rendezvous

Another interesting application of Rendezvous is Pocketster by Simeda:
http://www.simeda.com/pocketster.html

It's a PPC to PPC music 'broadcast' client program - think of sharing
iPod music over the air and thats about the thing we're talking here !

No, key indexes work like this : Your router / access point encrypts
the over the air packets with a 'secret key'. It generates 4 or more
variations on that key. You have to pick the right variation in order
to connect to the acceess point (look at the AP and the PPC and pick
the same Key, usually 32 characters long)

No, you shouldn't - the idea of DHCP is that the server configures
your devices without further intervention.

My beacon is on, but turning it off doesn't affect the ability of the
PPC to connect (although the network will be listed as 'unknown' or
similar). It has a very marginal effect on your network security, if
any.

FYI - I had no further problems getting it to work. Part of the problem may
have been that DHCP can be flakey on my Actiontec right after configuration
changes have been made.

My housemate has not been able to get his USB adapter to work with it, but
that is not a PocketPC problem. (It finds the WAP, and shows green on
channel 1, but then it cycles red through other possible channels, and the
Internet remains inaccessible. I haven't really troubleshot this issue yet
though)

Thanks again,
Joel

Great, glad that you have the pocketpc working. As with the usb adapter,
make sure it supports wpa and has the latest drivers. Aslo make sure the OS
on that computer is up to date.
