This is something that was done with both the PS2, and the PS3 slim. I also heard talk of Microsoft shrinking the process of both chips to 45nm. If this is done, I can see them pulling off a unified cooling system like in the image above. The shrink to 65nm alone reduced the heat by a considerable amount.

RRoD's are simply no longer an issue.

The people who have had multiple consoles do it on them (me included) have been getting refurbished consoles that are also as old or older than the ones we bought. The new ones have no issues.

[citation][nom]shadow703793[/nom]Is it me or does that HSF look like a stock Intel cooler from the Socket 478 era? 😵?[/citation]

you're right, it does looks like the stock 478 socket HSF design. 0.o

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom]The crapbox is outdated years ago, why are they rehashing this? Why are people still buying this old garbage? Games look like doo doo at 720p people dont have a clue what a high end PC can do to these consoles visually and audio wise. Not to mention Multitasking. Quad core, 8gb ram, 2 5870s in xfire 2560 x 1600 res anyone? Makes the crapbox look like the atari days in my world![/citation]

$300 to play decent-great looking games. or $3000 to play the same games yet with marginally better graphics. i hate moronic people that think anyone can just drop $3000 to play videogames.

Its not what system is better.

I have them all including a gaming PC.

Why?

I was sick and tired of certain games for PS3, Xbox, Wii, DS, PSP, and PC.......

now it doesnt matter.....

but honestly i get whats on sale....sometimes the PS3 has games on sale others Xbox......sometimes PC

just the roll of the dice on price!

on thing Microsoft has down!!!!! windows media center....you can connect any xbox to the media center for live tv...recorded shows...ect.

nobody else is doing this.....i did hear a rumor about this coming to the PS3 and i would like to check it out!

Aha! So we know that cooler master is the company responsible for the xbox 360 over heating issues!

[citation][nom]captaincharisma[/nom]expect the failure rate to go up if they release the slim since they couldn't figure out how to stop the current one from overheating.crashbox fanbois in 3....2....1.....[/citation]

that's kinda what i was thinking as well.. and i love my 360, but it has rrod'd on me, so the elites aren't immune to this either.

you dont have to pay 3k just 100 bucks for a 4850 slam it in your pc (dual core) and there you go better looking games at higher rez and only 100 dollars spent (assuming you have a pc) 0.0

The posting for the mobo designer is for the next gen xbox, MS is content using lab monkeys to design current gen xbox mobos.

Pick me Microsoft! I can make a motherboard! I don't know if it will play xbox360 games though... or any games for that matter, but I promise it will look pretty!

3000 for marginally better graphics? If your spend 3k on a pc your gona get silly fps in any game with noticeably better graphs. Or, as someone else pointed out, you can simply upgrade your video card?
tomshardware does something called "System builder marathon", there almost finished one right now actually, here's the link...

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-core-i7,2582.html

so they prove my point that 3k is overkill if you put the settings just 1 step up of what a 360 can do (since we only need to be marginally better here).
Their $750 system will still be more than good enough for a win, but then if your going to argue that $750 is way more than a console, then you'll get more thumbs down than this site allows (which sadly limits at 20)

Anyways back on topic, a slim down is always cool, since a price drop usually ensues, but...the system is almost 5 full years old, it should have been done 1+ year(s) ago, then again their probably just gona do it to save costs.

Okay, so here's what I don't understand...why is MS even investing their time and money into a "slim" version? Just because Sony started it with the PS2 practically 6 years ago doesn't mean that MS needs to pick it up. Where's the originality these days? I mean, first Sony is coming out with the Move and now this??? What's next...the Wii is going to start playing blu-rays? (ESPECIALLY since Nintendo has been talking about hi def a lot lately)

And another thing...the purpose of Sony coming out with slim versions is because their consoles tend to be larger than others (performance also seems to be higher with Sony consoles when compared to other current gen consoles). Sony saw it as a set back that the PS2 was considerably large, so they came out with a slim and then continued the idea with the PS3. MS just seems to be doing it because they made a fail 360 and it RROD'ed like crazy and they want to come out with a new model that will cut production cost, fix a few issues, but primarily to make up from all the money they lost for having to extend warranties.

If they want to increase performance for current 360's, why not instead just make a device that takes some computing away from the cpu/gpu and also cools the system? A USB device maybe...? That way, more computing can be done as well as keeping things cool. I know that there are already such products out there, but if MS were to spend just a fraction of their time/money on an item like this it would blow the others out of the water and would still be just as effective.

I personally believe that MS should be focusing all their efforts (at least in the video game dept) on a next gen console. Isn't it time by now??? Xbox 360 is going on its 5th year, which is now MORE time than the amount between the original Xbox and the 360 (11/01-11/05). Also, the same applies for the PS1, PS2 and PS3 (11/94-10/2000-11/06), and even Nintendo too...I'm not looking up the dates again lol. I would MUCH rather be reading an article on a leaked motherboard pic of the NEW console that MS would be coming out with, aside from just a lame slim version that I won't buy; or even a screenshot/trailer of the next gen launch title.

Wouldn't you?

Sony released the PSOne (slim playstation) in 2000, and before that, in 1997 Nintendo released a smaller version of the Super nintendo.

And even before that, Nintendo released a more compact version of the NES in 1993 (hell I never knew til now, I just checked it out lol)

Useless post really, just a fyi :)

You're missing the point. Let me describe the process when I want to play some video games.

1. Grab six-axis

2. Press power buttons

3. Scratch buttocks

4. Done!

Great looking games on a large screen HD-tv at the touch of a few buttons. That's real gaming experience right there!

You guys go sit at your desk in front of your 22" monitor, I'll laugh at you from my sofa while playing on my 48" HD-tv.

Seriously guys, there is more to it than just the best graphics.

Okay...PC gaming:

1. Turn on computer
2. Type password (if you even have one)
3. Double click game icon.
4. Play.

Yeah, that's sooo much more of a hassle. And fyi, I wouldn't use your tiny 48"...I have a 58" plasma that I use as a monitor. So, who said you can't have both better graphics and a kick ass display?

Maybe you're the one missing the point.
