I have a question for you users. I have been thinking about buying a xbox mainly for the dvd playback becasue my parents would be willing to go half with me in buying it. The only thing with me is there is only one game that impresses me. My question for you users is since I would be paying 180$ for half this includes the dvd kit would I be better in buying a stand alone dvd player for around 180$. Thank you.

You can get a real DVD player for less. A good name brand player, something like a Pioneer 343 can be had for less then $180, and will have much better video and compatability then a Game Box or Playstation.

If you want a DVD player, Get a Dvd player, not a Game Console!....
Exactly. The XBox is limited to software playback and doesn't include any neat filters that some of the more expensive DVD players include that improve image quality.

Of course, all the fancy filters on a stand-alone DVD player won't mean a damn thing unless you have a nice TV.

And much as I try, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 just won't run on my DVD player!

Well said. I'd get a PS2 because of the variety of games availible.

PS2 all the way. Largest market share, great game selection (exclusives like Gran Turismo 3, Grand Theft Autos, Final Fantasies, etc.), plus ample DVD playback capability. Plus it's not a Microsoft product.

Disagree... Xbox is an alright DVD player. Supports a good quality picture. I think the games are better than what is offered for PS2.

Game selection is awesome for PS2. The whole thing reminds me of years ago when Genesis owners refused to admit the SNES was better. Except this time the better system doesn't have the better technology.

Get a standalone DVD player. Then you won't have to make your movie purchase decisions based on the compatibility chart for the X-Crock/P$2. (There are certain movies that will not play on these consoles)

I'll be the first to say t get a GameCube. It's on par with the X-Crock and costs a lot less. And I recommend it for the same reason I recommend a stand-alone DVD player. It's a game console that is built to play games.

My first computer was a Packard Bell. I'm glad it was a Packard Bell. It taught me a lot about computers. Specifically, how NOT to build a computer.

Sometimes I wonder what planet you guys are on. If you want a good dvd player buy a good dvd player. Don't buy a game console because you will be disappointed. Even though the XBOX is far superior in playback capability to the PS2 the remote for it sucks and you have to pay extra for DVD playback capability. Sometimes M$ makes me happy and somtimes they kick me in the nads. Building progressive scan into the XBOX made me extremely happy. Making it available only for games left me with sore nads. The HDTV (480p) support for movies is mediocre at best becuase it lacks the support of progressive scan. Effectively forcing me to ice my nads once again.

You can get a superior dvd player for less then a $180 unless you dont care about visual quality. In which case I would get the XBOX unless of course you dont have a TV that will take adavantage of the perks of dvd playback on the XBOX. If you reach that point just get a PS2 and call it a day.

I'm off to ice the nads again.

Is the Xbox really better than PS2 for dvd playback?
I never really tried any dvds on my ps2 when i had it.

I love my xbox. I sold my ps2 down the river!! I highly disagree with everyone on here, my xbox is far superior to the ps2.. the games rock. My collection includes many that are not available on PS2.. they are Morrowind, Hitman2, Tony Hawk 4, Terminator Dawn of Fate, Gauntlet Dark legacy, Pirates legend of black kat, madden 2003, toejam and earl 3, house of dead 3, blood omen 2, unreal championship and test drive.
And i plan on buying godzilla destroy all monsters (another kickin game not available on PS2) when its available and mechassault, which is said to be as much a killer app as GTA3 was for PS2.

My ps2 never came close to delivering the experience of unreal championship in 4 player mode or on xbox live.

To the original poster, get the Xbox unless you have a HDTV.. I wouldnt mess with any other system, if your family has dolby digital surround sound its the only system that does surround sound in game, in real time.
PS2 does it in cutscenes and thats it.

Trust me its well worth it. I would only say GayStation 2 if you already had an initial investment in the system.

Just to clear any confusion, I own PS2, but also a PC DVD drive and a really swank Philips DVD player for my lounge. I agree the standalones are best.
