I guess hoping for DX10 is a lost cause.

It's always been a lost cause, Vista is architecturally different and would require far more work than a Service Pack to implement into XP. Besides, DX10 is one of the 'few' reasons to get Vista, M$ is unfortunately not quite dumb enough to do DX10 on XP because that would be the final nail in the coffin for XP.
