im looking to get a note book w/ a 1080p display for mid range gaming (borderlands 2, Crysis 3, BF3, TF2, Planetside 2, 1080p med/high settings, probably low for crysis 3). the 1080p Y500 is 879USD while the 1080p Y580 is 1349USD. their only difference is that the Y500 has GT 650m while the Y580 has a GTX 660m. is it worth the 470USD increase in price? i looked on notebook check and saw the 660m is 7 ranks (i think) above the 650m. is the Y580 worth it?

although i agree that dvd drives are pretty useless in this "era" is the 650m sli worth it, i dont rly care about playing games maxed out (crysis 3 looks pretty good on low 1080p IMO). also im planning on installing windows 7 when i get the computer (i really dont like windows 8). the 12gb one is pretty useless; i dont have any programs that can even use 4gb of ram :p

At 1080p the single 650m is a bad choice for most of the games you listed. 1600x900 is about the max resolution for more demanding titles if you want even medium settings. If you want to game at medium high settings at 1080p you will need either the 650m's in sli or the 660m. See here for benchmarks:
