10" Android tablet

Hi,

Any opinions on which simple 10" Android tablet is best?

Preferably something with plain and simple Android rather than a customized version as some manufactures seem to ship. From the bit of reading I have done it sounds like the modified versions cause more problems than they solve.

Then again is it possible to buy a tablet with an older version of Android, wipe that and install Android 4.1?

Thanks,

Yes and no. As the previous poster suggested, the N10 is one of the better 10 inches without much bloat. The other I would suggest is asus - they stay very close to stock.

As for getting a tab with an older OS, remember that unless they've offered an OTA for it, you'd need to root, flash, and have a compatible rom (stock or otherwise) already available for it.

Make sure to check those exist before you purchase.

Yeah this is most likely your best bet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 Edition and Sony Xperia are also really solid choices in this area.

So is the OS read from ROM on these tablets, if so that makes upgrading difficult, Not sure what an OTA is.

OTA = over the air, it's the real only method of distributing updates for cell phone operating systems.

Basically, if your company has made an updated package, you will get a notification about it and be permitted to download it. Otherwise, you need to find out if someone has made an updated image of the OS, called a ROM. Otherwise, there is no way to update it.

Think of it like a digital download vs. having a disc. The thing with android is, other people can make the disc. But you should check it exists first since these are device-specific. IE: You can't take one made for a Nexus 10 and use it on a Galaxy tab - you'll turn your device into a paperweight.

The samsung galaxy note 10.1 is the best 10" tablet in the market right now ,not only because of the full hd screen but also because it's a GREAT productivity tool with the Spen ,the multi-windows, android 4.3 and all the other staff.
I know it's not Pure android ,it's quite the opposite! but I'm sure that you will be able to use it in more important staff than the nexus 10, I hvae the older Note 10.1 version and I can tell you that I do everything that I need with it ,I even solve my homework on it !!
Finally ,I don't get your last question ! do you want to downgrade or upgrade the tablet ,anyways most tablets in the market right now are android 4.1 or up ,I don't believe you'll find anything below android 4.1 these days..
and btw ,whatever the tablet you're going to settle on ,you can always change it's stock rom and put a custom pure android rom instead like the most famous pure roms out there for most devices : AOKP and CM.
I hope this will help.. :)

Very interesting, didn't know you can change the ROM with the OS on it.

Probably all very nice tablets but the Nexus, Samsung, Sony are all out of the budget range.

That leaves me with some of the cheaper manufacturers to choose from:
Sumvision, Hannspree, Nurvo
Are any of these half decent or are they all crap?

Or maybe something inbetween like an Asus.

Never heard about any of them , but for asus , it is a very good toablet manufacturer for sure , but I think their tablets are not as cheap as the nexus series, but if they are cheaper , you can certainly go with them ! Otherwise if the nexus are cheraper or at the same price point , then it would be more preferable to go with the nexus.

The Nexus is made by Asus.

Those are pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel. If you search around you could probably get a previous generation Galaxy Tab 2 for around $200 - $300 refurbished. If you don't want Android maybe check out the Asus Transformer Book - it runs full Windows, includes a keyboard attachment, and is less than $400.

My 50 cents, but I work retail - and not a single sub-$100.00 tablet has lasted more than a week out of the store. Once you get to that point, you're better off not buying anything, legitimately.

The absolute lowest I would go is around $129.00 for a ASUS MemoPad 7" on any Android tablet. 10" will be more.
If you wanted to go for a bit more of a budget option, you could try a brand like Ainol. They make a bunch of tablets that *I've heard* are decent.

You still need to consider if it's a tablet you can flash a rom for or not if it has the wrong OS version - at the moment this is only really officially supported on some samsung, asus, and nexus tablets by major rom makers.

I suggest to buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2/3, it comes fully loaded with Android 4.0, dual-core processor (Cortex), not bad 3.2 megapixel camera. It's working very fluently.
