Ok... got a cable at radio shack today to use on a business trip and will
give to daughter to use with her vx3200.... got it working with the vx7000
and thought I'd try it with the vx3200 (we're going on a trip this weekend
and that will give me two phones to switch between). Her phone wouldn't
authenticate - called CS, talked to a Travis - he said no one is allowed to
use the 1X network without paying for a data plan and that Verizon is
cracking down and canceling all accounts that use it without paying for a
data plan. Sounded like BS to me... he insists it was never supposed to be
enabled on my phone and they'll cancel my accounts if I use it. He said I'm
only permitted to use the QNC network (about a year ago, tech support told
me it was going to eventually be shutdown - called because I has connection
problems). I told Travis to go ahead and cancel my accounts for using it - I
was told a long time ago I could use it and there is no way in hell I'll pay
a cancellation fee. (I swear I enabled it on two of the three phones, but
according to my account online, it's only on my phone.)

He said it was enabled for mobile web and get it now but I was only allowed
to use it with those two features - using it with mobile office without a
data plan would get my accounts cancelled (I once had mobile web, but
cancelled it long before they turned on 1x.)

So... is half of anything he said true? Or is he just another CSR who
doesn't know what they are talking about?

Can data plans be enabled on voice phones? If I'm sure the answer is no,
I'll call back and ask for it to be enabled again and then tell them to give
me a data plan. (I heard others were told the same story Travis told me and
when they tried to enable a data plan the CS couldn't and enabled the 1x
network anyway.)

I really hate playing musical CSRs.... but I want to use all of my phones
as modems and QNC is too damn slow.

Q2 - if Travis is correct, and I change my plan to take advantage of the 100
min or some other plan next week, will they remove 1x access from the
vx7000?

Call another CSR and tell him/her you want to put National Access on your
phone to better download GIN programs. Don't mention computers or internet
access or they'll push the paid data plans.

I want it on the vx3200 lines....

Hubby isn't real enamored with his - he doesn;'t like change and has used a
Kyocera bar phone for 4 years... and he wanted wap on his this time (silly
me, I didn't look closer than the price and thought if they offered mobile
web as an option, it supported wap).... daughter is mad I got a camera
phone and she didn't... so if there are some decent phones on special next
week, we'll exchange them for something else.

thanks for confirming it :)

Or I'll go into the store and have them do it - if the share prices drop,
I'll add a line for my mom while I'm there. (I may do it anyway - I gave her
a prepaid and she doesn't usually use $15/mo but she has cell phone envy and
wants a new one. <g> Not having her call just to let me know how much time
she had left or to tell me about the latest phone advertised in AARP would
be worth the extra cost at the current price. )

There's another thread labeled "new plans on 1/17".... Don't know how true
this is, but there was a statement saying
"They are dropping the price from $20 to $10 on the secondary phone on the
family share plan."
I am thinking about getting one for my mom (for me, the unlimited free
calling from her to her son is priceless :) When I read your reply, I was
thinking it may be of interest to you also, and worth checking out. (if
true, cheaper than a prepaid, and free in-network to her son, and other
verizon users may be a good thing)

It's actually worth the extra $5 (if it stays at $20) - she is really good
about using it nights/weekends when the rates are lower (I didn't fall for
the $15 credit to change to the new pricing schedule) and wouldn't have to
worry about running out of time. Both of my regular accounts have 400 min
but we never use more than about 200, so she could use it more during the
day. We're slowing getting all the kids/in-laws on verizon... so everyone
will eventually be IN. Everyone but my brother and sister who live near
her - they are anti-cell (but borrow hers when they go on long trips).

We get a laugh every time she calls to remind me that she's about out of
minutes or her renew is about up, but the calls about the neat new phones
are the funniest. She's 85 and it's all she can do to find the saved numbers
and push send - she takes it on trips but doesn't turn it on then wonders
why it doesn't ring. Voice mail? I gave up... and she wants a new phone.

Does she have voice dialing on the pre-pay phone? Mom was having trouble
with those little buttons after her stroke, so I had her train it for
voice... Hit send, when it asks who to call say "Son"....was pretty cool...
One thing to be careful of, she lost/misplaced her teeth one time and the
phone couldn't understand who she said to call. Didn't hear from her for two
weeks.

If that works for you, they actually have voice digit dialing on some of the
new phones too.

<lol> mom can talk good without her partial in.

I don't think her phone has voice dialing - it's a Nokia and I can't
remember if I got it for her Christmas 2001 or 2002. Maybe 3365 or something
in that neighborhood - online account services doesn't have the phone model
listed.

yes, I did - everything works, it just won't authenticate because it's not
enabled on the phone. QNC works. :(

One thing I discovered is the 3200 used one set of modem drivers (from the
VZAccess install - HS 1xRTT) and the 7000 uses the other set (plain 1xRTT)
so even if have to switch to the molasses network, I won't need to
reconfigure the baud rate or change the init string.

On my vx4400 I have to use a different initialization string for 1x than
for QNC - AT$QCMDR=3 for 1x and AT$QCMDR=2 for QNC. Perhaps the same is
true for your phone.

tried both - QNC works with the 1X string - I need the init string for the
vx7000 too, which has national access service enabled. The vx3200 doesn't.
:(
