The problem with connecting 2 outputs together is they can try to drive one another.

So it MAY work, but it may sound like hell and be bad for the computers. Adding some resistance can prevent then from driving one another, but will cut the output volume. Some onboard sound cards already have a resistor inline with the output and should generally protect them selves.

An alternative to this would be to run line-out from one computer to line-in on the other computer. This allows the computers to share the same headphones without any of this driving issue.

So you would have computer 1 and 2

Computer 1 line out to computer 2 line in
Headphones on computer 2.

Computer 2's line in has to be un-muted or set to listen.

It might even drive headphones too :)

If you are a DIY type a single opamp and some resistors is all it takes to make an inverting mixer(2 if you want to un-invert the signal. No volume control with that setup). Headphone driving depends on the opamp for sure(something like the 4556 or TLE2062 will drive headphones, but they are not considered to be "audiophile"). A symmetrical power supply is recommended, but it can be done with single supply.
