Relating to the flashlight app:
I use TeslaLED (https/market.android.com/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.flashlight)
It has a nice multi-function widget and works like a charm (on a Motorola Defy).

Multiple options and good cross-device support are also key in this kind of application.
