all pertinent information. Responding might foster a solution, by the way,

I had this happen three times when the camera was new. I was unsure of
what I was doing and I tended to hold the shutter button halfway down for
a long time and perhaps I was "chattering" on the button. I also noted
that it was very cold on at least one of these occasions. I also reseated
the lens (I have only the 17-85 IS USM). It no longer seems to happen.

I got the 20D about 2/1/05 and the firmware was (and still is) version 1.1.0.
