What output type are you splitting? A splitter from my understanding will make the computer see one monitor and send one output to both monitors, so basically you have two monitors showing the same thing.

I am splitting the VGA and getting the results you describe. Do I have another option? The monitors I picked up do not have USB or any other input types (Dell D2015HM 19.5" Screen LED-Lit Monitor )

Many laptops have a limit of two displays, either the laptop screen and an external monitor or dual external monitors when using a docking station.

If you want a third screen you can get a USB video card (USB3 if your laptop has that).
