Hello

Is there any way to set up an account for a 3 watt bag phone ? I have
an account with Verizon. I called Verizon today and the rep informed
me as of July 2003 they won't activate analog phones. I'm trying to
run credit cards with a s1936 data interface and a 3 watt bag phone.
Do they make digital/analog bag phones?

Any help would be great.

My old bag phone worked at fantastic
distances, especially off the coast of
Florida. True it took up a lot of spectrum.
True it was big and heavy, but it sounded
good. My first digital sounded like a buzz
saw. You knew that there was a human
voice at the other end, but you couldn't
tell what was being said. Digital is about
the only choice for spectrum economy and
services. Digital could sound less buzzy
and a lot more natural, but then it would
have to occupy about the same spectrum
width as analog. I found one CS rep who
tried to set up an old analog phone temp-
orially for me, but the ESN had too many
digits and wouldn't plug in. Luck!!!

One, get a phone that you can get a 'cell cradle' or some other ATA that
certain brands of phones can give you a analog jack in the back.
http://www.whpwireless.com/ or similar.

Two, buy a digital phone on an NSR plan and then do an online ESN swap after
a couple of weeks to a 3 watt bagphone.

Three, get on online credit card processing application that runs off of a
laptop and then you can do on a laptop with a data plan or do MOU.

Scotty.

You may have to turn off the caller id at verizon's website for the phone to ring..

Digital may not sound as nice but I can conduct business or make a private
call without broadcasting in hifi FM to everyone who has a scanner...

Using it may prove to be a bigger problem than getting one activated!

I had a bag phone on a "tag along" plan, specifically for camping where
the power made a big difference.

The problem is, all the power in the world doesn't help if Verizon
allocates so few channels to analog that they are always busy! Were I
frequented, the phone worked fine from about 2AM to 5AM, useless any other
time of day!

Yep, I forgot about that.
Unless it's CID capable already.

Not sure when they changed it, I have a tellular system in my boat, and a
kyocera cellphone. I used to switch the ESN between the phone and the
boat/phone system. Since about January, they no longer allow it. Used to
work, just stopped being allowed a few months ago.

For calls requiring privacy ( calling bank, ordering and handing out credit
card number ) I use digital mode as well.
All other times, I use analog mode on my Startac or my Bagphone and an
encryption device that plugs into my bagphones rj11 pots interface, if I
need secrecy over analog. Probably more stuff than the average citizen
has...... ;-)

You are correct though, there are times when Digital mode is the way to go.
Most of my conference calls though, are of the non-secret nature or I use
analog mode via a rj11 interface and polycom conference phone, to hear
everything, including the side-bar conversations going on in the background
and every thing else, which digital screens out ( which is a good thing for
the most part, as it is part of the battery savings ).

So, no right or wrong answer as long as it fits the users requirements.
If someone wants to eavesdrop on my conversation about lunch or fishing,
etc., be my guest. ;-)

They don't allow you to change your ESN online with the Tellular anymore?
Is that what you are saying? Or it doesn't ring?

At first it wouldn't allow me to change the ESN claiming it was analog, then
it was approved, and the ESN change worked, now it went back to non working
again.

I only use my boat on weekends/vacations etc, but use the cellphone
everyday. No sense having multiple phone numbers, I just tend to activate
whatever I will be using. What the CS person told me was that while the
system was approved for use and could be activated on contracts before
January, since it doesn't have e911 capability, and due to a change in
january, no new plans can activate non e911 enabled phones (I moved from the
east coast to the west coast in february, had to ((well wanted too for the
new freebies)) get a whole new contract with a new phone number).
Supposedly, if you have an older contract (pre 2004) you can change esn's to
a non e911 enabled phone, but not with new plans and old phones.

CAVEAT: I have no idea if the explanation was truthful or not, but from
experimentation, I can activate it on my sisters verizon account, but not
mine. Too bad she gets annoyed when I disable her phone :) (Hey! What are
brothers for except to annoy sisters? :)

<CYNIC ALERT! CYNIC ALERT!>

Don't be surprised if they decide to interpret this so that when you next
use your New Every 2, you will be signing a new contract and are no longer
able to activate an old phone on it.

One of my competitors used to monitor my AMPS calls. Unfortunately, he was
so stupid he called one of his FORMER customers and LEFT A VOICE MESSAGE
asking the customer why he had called me, revealing what he was doing. The
customer gave me the tape out of his answering machine as evidence of this
Federal violation....(c;

I don't think he'll be listening in to my conversations in the
future.....(c;
