30" Dish + Motor + Ku Linear LNB+DSS Lnb

I strapped a DSS LNB to my Linear LNB using plastic ties, and I got it
working quite well. Getting 99-100% quality signal on the Echostar and Nimiq
birds. My question is how is this going to work with my motor (not yet
installed) ? I'm assuming the motor is going to be configued by the prime
LnB (the linear Ku) so If I direct the motor to go to Echostar 7, its going
to use the position of the Linear LNB instead of the DSS one that I want.
how do I take into account that the DSS lnb will be skewed a bit?
There is an option in my Satellite setup called "Skew" and its configured
as -45 or 45. I really don't know what that represents?
Anyone got any tips?
Thanks!

You won't be able to use Usals(diseqc1.3) with the dss lnb, its off center
so the calculations from long/lat/sat pos will be off a bit. You can still
use diseqc1.2 with the motor, just find the satellite, store its position
and you're done.

So you mean I can just use USALS for all the satellites, and then for the
DSS LNB required sats, I adjust them manually and store the results in the
receiver? That way when I do actually tell the motor to move to 119, its
really going to 123 (for example?)

What type of receiver do you have ?

If you have a Fortec Lifetime, I could tell you how I compensate for the
3.5 degree skew using USALS. This is the only FTA receiver that I have
ever used and I don't know about other receivers so I won't go into it
now.

It's a Pansat 2500A.

Sorry but I have to claim complete ignorance when it comes to the Pansat
products. Pansat and Fortec Lifetime may have similar capabilities when
it comes to USALS so I will very briefly describe the procedure that
works great for me. Perhaps you may be able to expand on it so that
something similar works in your situation.

I have a DSS LNBF fastened directly to the east side of a FortecStar
linear LNBF. The EchoStar satellite located at 119-degrees west has a lot
of FREE music channels and a few FREE TV channels ..... including NASA-
TV, AngelOne, and Dish info channels. I will use it as an example.

First I selected the EchoStar-7 entry and let the USALS move my dish to
the correct heading. Then I used the original FortecStar LNBF to look for
a relatively strong channel and made a note of the Freq, vpid and apid
for later use. It can be a scrambled channel. It doesn't matter because
you are just verifying and noting a signal strength reading .... not
watching TV.

Next I created a new satellite entry in my satellite list and called it
"Dish_119". The table will not say 119 when finished so I used this name
as a reminder instead. I went to "Antenna Setup" and selected my newly
added satellite from the listing. Then I entered the previously noted
freq, vpid, apid as the frequency to use and selected USALS and pressed
"OK". At this screen you can enter an estimated heading such as 115.5W
and select "Move" and press "OK". There is a signal strength and quality
graph at the top of the screen. If you think it is not maxed out, just
change the heading to another setting such as 115.8W and repeat the
process until you have determined the position of maximum strength and
quality ..... then select "Save" and press "OK".

Again, the listing does not give the location as 119W but the name of
"Dish_119" tells me instead.

It is true that I could have just modified the original entry for
EchoStar-7 but now I have 2 different entries .... one for each LNBF.
Also if you fastened the DSS LNBF directly to the west side of the linear
LNBF your heading will be approximately 122.5W and if on the East side it
will be approximately 115.5W.

That should give you some ideas.

Good Luck,

Thanks PON, my setup is similar to yours. My LNB is strapped on to the West
side of the Fortec LNB. This gives me enough information to get started, and
good idea on creating a new new satellite entry so I can still use the
Fortec LNB to move to 119. I am mainly interested in NASA and the Radio
channels.

Another question, my DSS LNB won't be plugged into the motor. The Fortec
LNB (single universal) will be plugged into the motor.. is this how yours is
setup?

I don't use the DSS LNBF very often. I have the coax equipped with a
slip.on connector where it connects to the LNBF.

When I am in the mood to use the DSS LNBF, I just walk out into the
backyard and unplug the coax from the linear LNBF and plug it onto the
circular LNBF..... or vice versa. It takes me about 2 minutes.

The best way to do it would be to use a 22khz switch or a DISEqC switch.

If you use a DiSEqC switch make sure to put it in line after the motor.

this is what I am considering for the configuration:

1. Fortec LNB (Linear) to the motor, from the motor to Port #1 of the DiSEqC
switch
2. DSS LNB (dual cable) to an existing multiswitch in the house (this will
merge DSS and Local Cable signals on a single cable line)
3.A Diplexer will split the cable/DSS single again and will connect to Port
#2 of the DiSEqC switch near the receiver.
The output of the DiSEqC switch will connect to the Input (IR) of the
Satellite Receiver
The DiSEqC switch will be near the receiver, not outside near the Dish

The reason I would like DSS on the existing cable line is so I can still use
my DirecTV subscription on other televisions in the house. I realize that I
would have to position my Dish to a DTV bird before this would work. This
allows me to use a single dish for all FTA and DSS

Is this an acceptable configuration?

do you mean put the DiSEqC between the LNBF and the Motor?

that is, one output of DSS to port 2 of the DiSEqC switch
and the output of the Linear LNB to port 1 of the DiSEqC switch
Then input of the DiSEqC switch to the motor connection.
Motor connection to the Receiver input
???
Thanks!

Is this because of the motor? because most of the installation instructions
I see the Diseqc switch is installed just before the receiver?

When installing a motor, place the DiSEqC switch on the output of the motor
between the motor and the LNB(s).

In a non-motorized setup, DiSEqC switches may be installed at the dish
location or in near the receiver. As cable length can affect the DiSEqC
signal, some opt for placing the switches near the receiver.

Thanks for the info. Are all DiSEqC switches designed for outdoor
installation? Should I be looking for a "Outdoor" type weatherproof DiSEqC
switch? or are all of them designed for outdoor use?

Not all DiSEqC switches are created equal, but for the most part, most are
well sealed. I'm sure that your fittings will give problems before you have
a waterlogged switch. Covers are nice, but I placed a poly box near my
antennas to keep switches and connections out of the weather.

I noticed my switch making a clicking noise today. Is this normal?
I got a Microyal SW22 switch. Does the 22KHz connection go to the Linear
LNB or the Circular LNB? I am confused on this one. One input is labeled
LNB A (22Khz ON) and LNB B?

Doesn't technically matter, but it will be easier to program with the
DBS LNBF connected to the tone on input.
