I need to get one very soon, but know next to nothing about them.

Is there anything in particular I need?

Anything I need to avoid? I realize the 4K "upscaling" players are just plain Blu Ray players.

Know of any particularly solid players?

Shame they are so damn expensive.

It'd be best to get one that does 10bit color also referred to as HDR. This provides a wider color gamut that is frankly more visually important than the increased resolution of 4k on a TV.

The XBOX One S does this for sure. Can't speak to any standalone bluray players.

I'd like to get the Oppo, but then I'd better find another like of work better suited to supporting that level of taste and refinement. I've always wanted to be a hit man. I hear they make a living wage.

But, seriously, it seems Samsung's 8500 is decent. I do get a bit confused by the fluidity of models and availability. You might think you are buying something you've read about, only to buy the wrong model by missing a particular extension or the year of manufacture—and I don't know how you get the year of manufacture from the outside of a box.

Oppo seem nice, but the price is obscene. Twelve hundred for a video player? WTF....

I've been looking online for a while, now, and am disheartened by the high prices in general when juxtaposed with reports of poor quality in almost all name brands. Stuttering seems a common issue, along with overheating, noise, and short product life spans.

Were all Blu-ray and DVD players equally overpriced and crappy at first, or is this a new thing with 4k UHD?
