I let him know it will be tiff to find something good at that price. He uses photoshop prime? I think is the video editing software. He edits videos for YouTube that's it. So he needs something with atleast 8gb ram.
yes, sounds reasonable, but the budget is a bit limited i think
most people for that would buy a i5 or i7 hq, 8 gbs of ram, 1 tb hard disk minimum, that kind of machine is around 700 dollars with a decent gpu, a 1050 at least
You are not going to get a photo editing laptop for $500 just like you are not going to get a new porsche 911 for 20k.
There is 2 very different levels on laptop processors. There is the U serries and the HQ serries.
The U serries i7 is really less then a desktop i3 as they are both dual core with hyperthreading, while the i7U has turbo core its speed is still slower then a deasktop i3.
The HQ serries on the other hand is more inline with traditional desktop CPUs and follow the the same i3 vs i5 vs i7 structure of cores/hyperthreading ability.
So an 3rd/4th Gen i5 HQ is a lot better then a brand new i7U.
To properly do the job he needs an i7HQ latpop with a 940/950/1050 GPU in it which would be more like $750-800 range.
Could that do the job? If it's used refurbished I don't think he will mind. I will pass all this to him. He does not know much about computers. I don't think gen is expecting top of the line laptop something that he can edit with. His current laptop is old with only 4gb ram

Look back at my post earlier about the difference between U and HQ processors in laptops.
Any U serries laptop is going to be very insufficient for video editing.
I think the used model from Newegg is quite a bit better. Would be nice to find at least a Haswell, but can't pass up the 16GB of memory and the 256GB SSD. They have quite a number of used workstation class laptops in the $500 range.
