8 inks printer vs others

Over here home printing using the traditional 4-6 inks system cost about
$0.25 CAD for each print. Recently I saw the Canon and HP color printers
using the 8 ink system. I look at the results and the quality of the prints
appears to be better than the usual Photo Lab. costing around $0.25 to $0.30
CAD. I wonder if any one has done a cost analyses regarding these new 8
inks printers.

If cost is the only measure than a commercial printing service will be
cheaper. I really cannot see why anyone would bother with a photoprinter
from a cost analysis basis. The cost of inkjet ink and decent paper is
insane. Glossy inkjet paper, paper with a simple coating, essentially costs
the same per sheet as color photographic paper with its complex multilayered
chemical coatings.
However in my lifelong pursuit of a color print that looks anything like
what I thought I saw in the viewfinder when I pressed the shutter button I
have never found a lab, other than paying for custom hand printing (talk
about big bucks!), that can achieve what an aging boy, a monitor calibrator,
Photoshop and a decent inkjet photoprinter can accomplish in just a few
minutes.
At this point in my life I could care less what it costs to finally,
reliably get color prints I like.

Exactly. Some people will pay $1000 for a lens and then worry about what the
prints cost? :)

There are alternatives: Glossy photo paper from Costco at 17.95 (US)
for 125 sheets comes to less than 5 cents per 4x6 (there are even
cheaper papers, but not as heavy weight, and other drawbacks). Refill
ink at 50 cents per cartridge is going to get the total cost way under
10 cents per print. For me, it's not the money, it's the principal, that
I can print as much as I want without regard for the expense. (OK, I
lied, it's about the money!)

Ok you can buy brand X paper at Cosco and BJ's and you negate some of
the features that make the new ink jet printers desireable. One story
is the HP designjet 130 a $1500 from which a lot of photographers are
getting beautiful glossy prints that are extrapolated to 70 year life
spans. Put Staples paper in it and you get a 2 year life using the same
testing procedures. I have had to calculate print costs for a lot of
inkjets. Even the most expensive come under $2 for an 8x10 print. This
sounds reasonable to me. Unless you can have a relationship with the
one who is doing your printing you are asking for off color prints. The
big advantage of using one of the new photo printers is that your
results will be what you want them to be.
In resonse to why is inkjet paper as expensive as color print paper,
that is a bummer, the IJ paper coatings aren't as simple as has been
said, but it is true they are much less complex as color print papers.
Why don't they sell 100 sheet or 250 sheet boxes. Yes this seems like
one big commercial scam, but the advances in printers and inks in the
last few years is extraordinary.

Well, I guess if 2 heads clog in an 8 cart setup that's a failure rate
of 25% but if 2 heads clog in a 4 cart system that's 50%...
If printers use more carts, the average capacity of each cart goes down
and the daily occurrence of one cart being deemed 'empty' (it usually
isn't) increases.

Or pay $1,000 for a lens, and get photos printed by someone who gets
payed $10 / hour and doesn't care.

My favorite is when people will talk about a certain color print film
having a "warm cast" looking at prints from walmart! ;-)
