I shared his perception for a time of not playing PC games at all.
In fact, I stopped some 6 years ago because I found most of them idiotic.
Recently I took up gaming, but in a highly selective manner by playing only those games that present a mental (intellectual) challenge and has an engaging story, because that's something I like.
Games can be beneficial in terms of developing motor skills and of course mental stimulation.
I wouldn't go around saying this child will have an abismal future simply because of the supposition he has no friends or that he'll turn into a social outcast (which people can become regardless of the circumstances ... depends on how they're wired, and theres nothing wrong even if they don't 'fit in' - in fact, I abhore the very idea).
While I use my laptop a lot of the time (sometime up to 16 hours per day, or more) predominantly for other things than games (such as Internet, 3d art and writing), I have to ask myself did he really take into consideration when he said 'they should gow out and make friends'?
I don't think he thought this one out too much (if it were indeed his own words to begin with) because that's a bit of an contradiction when compared to his own '4 hours per day' (sometimes 10) of computer use.
Socialization is an overglorified concept to begin with.
Not all of us are like that for one thing, and for the other, I personally detest company of numerous other human beings (but not all) for long periods of time (because I find a lot of them exhausting, childish, etc.).
Also, to those who are 'feeling bad' about themselves because of this kids acomplishments and age ... don't be.
It's a different time, and technology is much more accessible in comparison to when it was before, plus parents are coming to the slow realization that technology is our future.
Although honestly, footbal?
Not to be stereotypical, but I just hope he doesn't develop a nasty personality trait of other footbal fans and turn into an utter neanderthal at a game for example.
I never found that particular sport attractive, though I do other sports, such as running and some muscle exercises (mainly for my own body maintenance, life extension and health).
