Do I really need to have a 1080p display for a gaming laptop and to play blu ray movies?

Umm no? For gaming you can have pretty much any resolution, the higher the better, at the cost of FPS.

For blu-ray movies, the player would scale the image to fit with your resolution, but the best result would be gotten with a 720p or 1080p resolution.
