Acer 5315 Upgrade

I have an Acer 5315, would like to swap HDD for SSD and load XP. Have downloaded all drivers for XP. Any advice or experience.

Purchased a 120gb HDD, swapped with one with Vista, installed XP. Works fine!
My only concern is the lack of Acer Epower management software for XP. Will the fan still come on?

The fan is likely controlled by the BIOS as a function of temperature and clockspeed. XP/Vista shouldn't have an impact on it.

I forgot how nice XP is compared to Vista. Faster and more friendly, not always asking permission to do something. I hope Windows 7 is as friendly.

Windows 7 still integrates the UAC, which is the permission asker in Vista. You can shut it off, though. Personally, I find Vista much more enjoyable and easier than XP.

My 5315 now boots up in 30sec. compared to >2min. for Vista. and runs much faster. I have yet to see the 'hourglass'. only using <4gb on drive. Granted , I don't use very many app's, just Works 9 and some audio book programs.

But Vista was probably the OEM install, correct? You can't compare a bloated install to a clean one.

I tried to delete all the bloatware, even then it is/was slow. I guess the Acer epower software and its associated monitoring software takes up a lot of overhead. Plus Vista monitoring your every move. Feels like 'Big Brother'.

Still. A clean install is always better than any other OS install. It's not really a fair comparison.

OK, maybe I'm just used to XP and opposed to change. I went kicking and screaming from DOS to Windows, so maybe I just like things simple. By the way, I'm 70 years old and worked on the first PC's. I paid 50$ for the 120gb HDD, I remember when a 20mb HDD was > $200. How times have changed.

That's what I think afflicts most people, too. I liked moving from DOS to Windows. The errors were kind of annoying, but they went down over time. I remember when I upgraded my computer to 24k RAM. Man...I couldn't even run Firefox on that, now.

I finally replaced my 50lb HP desktop with a Dell mini9. It has 8gb SSD, 2 gb Ram, wireless kbd & mouse, 19" vga monitor and Canon printer. I paid $211 for the mini refurb, $9 for the 2gb ram with rebate. Can you believe the computing power for that kind off money? Holey Moley Batman!

BTW, the 5315 is running fine too.
