Can the old Acer Aspire 4552 Athlon II P340 upgraded with a new processor? It's with S1g4 socket, so is Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile N660 supported? Thanks!.

Thank you for the tips, really appreciate it.
Yes, I'm also thinking about going four cores as it will definitely gives better performance like you mentioned. However, I use this laptop mainly for image processing: LightRoom & Photoshop. From various sources I learned that these software benefits mainly from higher clock, while not much from adding cores. I'm running P340 @2.2GHz now, and while I'm sure switching to quad core will gives me better multitasking, what I'm really in need of is a boost in clock speed. That said, after a casual search on ebay, I found that there are few 'reasonably priced' Socket S1g4 CPU that could serve as a better alternatives to my existing P340:

- Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile X620 3.1Ghz
- Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile N660 3.0Ghz
- Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile N640 2.9GHz
- Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile N620 2.8GHz

As for the quad cores, unfortunately they are all either the same per-core clock as my existing CPU or slower
- Phenom II Quad-Core Mobile P960 1.8GHz
- Phenom II Quad-Core Mobile N950 2.1Ghz
- Phenom II Quad-Core Mobile N970 2.2GHz > Rather expensive, so probably not an option.

Besides compatibility of the motherboard, I also worried about heat, as those CPU are often with higher TDP. That's why I asked the first question in the first place. The laptop itself is a bit old, but if somehow a little 'tweak' that cost a little could bring a bit of push to the performance, then why not.. :)

Yeah, that too. But jumping from 25W to 35W is not that high, is it? Since 35W TDP still means plenty to choose from. But, yes I might as well play save.

Edit: P650 is listed here with 35W and 2.8GHz? http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+P650+Dual-Core

It's still 35W, and more than likely your laptop wont support anything more than 25W :(

On this reference, it seems that it can handle 35W though..
And on this site it's sold with N660 3GHz 35W. That particular item looks exactly like my laptop :)
