I just bought a new replacement cpu fan for my 4 year old Acer Aspire 5930g. Bought it from Ebay, and it was sent from Hong Kong to Norway for like 8$:p

The issue is: When I replace the old fan with the new one, the new one stops the minute I put it in the right spot. When I say, hold it over the computer, lays on the table, hold it in my hand, it works perfectly fine. But the second I put it in the correct position it stops. If I put the old one back in it runs fine. But it makes a hell of a noise (reason I'm changing).

What has come to my attention is that right under where the fan is supposed to be there is a magnet. Could it be that its the magneticfield that stops my fan from spinning? It seems to me that there is no metal in the fan, but there could be someting inside it (got to break it to see if it is, so thats not an option).

Does anyone know what this magnet does and how do I fix my problem? Kinda don't want to order another fan, wait 5 weeks just to see the same thing happening again.

Depending on the type of fan you got, there is a possibility that the magnet is causing it to stop working. Actually by the description you gave it probably is.
Do you know what type of fan it is exactly?

Did your old fan have anything on it that would go between the fan and magnet? Otherwise the fan in the image looks right. If you can't get it to work, I would return the fan asap.

I have no idea at all! Actually thats pretty odd, I would think that a magnet anywhere near an electrical circuit would cause mayhem! I don't suggest removing though, its probably there for a reason.
Have you tried installing the fan then re fitting the cover? Maybe the cover needs to be on so it can work or something.

I found a video you could check out, if it doesn't solve your problem maybe you could clean up you old fan and re-install it. Check it out, it may be helpful:

The magnet is for the subwoofer! My fan is gone too in my 5930g, and my screen is gone also. I just managed to install OSX Lion on it so I wanna fix it up now. How did you get on in the end?

I have the same problem. Here are some more inside picture of new and old fans. Anybody any idea what can be solution to this problem?

I think that different coils in new fan is the main problem.

Magnet is here:
