Acer aspire 6920 power/startup issues

I have an Acer Aspire 6920 laptop that has been locking up and losing power intermittantly. I have had past battery issues and the power jack has been loose for some time, but when the power cuts out the led is still lit after the initial blip. any fixes?

LED for the LCD? Or power indicator LED (I'm not acquainted with this model, so I'm not sure that it has the latter).

Sounds like a faulty main board; maybe even a problem with RAM or the memory banks themselves. Can you provide any other details?

Power indicator led does go out but will trn back on after a sec. one of the heat sinks had no thermal paste on contact and it had been running warm.

Ah, so it was thermal overload? Hopefully it's all good now.
