Acer Aspire One sound output issues

I was recently given a like-new Acer Aspire One laptop, and performed a factory reset on it.

I don't know if the external audio jack worked before or not, but now it definitely doesn't. I get some slight crackling when I plug speakers into either the headphone or mic port, so I don't believe that the ports are dead.

There isn't any visible physical damage in or around the ports. I have been looking everywhere trying to figure out how to fix this (if possible). I thought for a moment that maybe this was an issue with Aspire Ones, but now I really don't know.

P.S. The onboard speakers work just fine.

Solution
It may be just a loose connection inside. I would check that first. If it isn't that, the ports just may need replacing. Which can be done pretty reasonably.

OR ... You could also, instead of using the 3.5mm ports, use a USB one. You can still use the 3.5 mm headphone/speaker/mic, but by using an adapter, you can connect it through a USB port.
