I can't seem to find this model for sale anywhere from 2011. It was $779. It sported, what's it called... nVidia U240M graphics? Anyone know of a current equivalent TimelineX unit? Or, if not TimelineX, similar performance in same price range.

There's the one I have that's 0.7 inches larger, the AS4830TG-6808. This one has a newer (and faster) i5 that doesn't suffer from the throttling issues the old 3830TG and 4830TG models suffered from, and the benefit of a (removable, clearly, should you get the right caddy) DVD-RW drive.

$699.99 new from TigerDirect.

$649.99 from MicroCenter

I love it, BTW, and if you look hard enough you can find a modified BIOS that undervolts the GPU a hair so you can push some serious clocks (currently running mine at 800MHz GPU and 1000MHz RAM) for some beastly FPS. I took out the optical...

I took out the optical drive, clearly, and put a SSD in the primary SATA slot and moved the mechanical drive to the optical bay. It's super light for the power it holds and the battery power is unbeatable. I work and game from everywhere (home, work, Starbucks) so this laptop and my USB 3G dongle were great buys.

Not finding that one from TigerDirect Canada or Newegg Canada. How does this one compare (other then the slightly smaller screen) to the one you gave links for?

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215292CVF

I could order from the States but I think I'd get customs duty about 10% slapped on.

The Source Canada has a few in-store of this one left. Wondering again about comparison to the one in your links.

These two seem to be identical except for dual English/French boot unless I missed something.

Yeah the one I linked was a 4830, that's still a 3830 but it's what you were after initially. You'd be good to buy that one as long as the company is reputable (sorry, I don't know Canadian retailers).

There's also this, 3830tg $682.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215292CVF

This, the 4830tg: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215294CVF

Just be careful of those older CPUs potentially have throttling issues. Look into Throttlestop to get rid of that.

After looking at the Throttlestop download page and the Guide, I may not have the know-how to safely use it. That aside, however, how would one be able to tell if the CPU is throttled if you don't have a known unthrottled CPU of the same model number on another identical computer to compare it to?

Run ThrottleStop with the Log File option checked and when you are finished gaming, look in the log file and see what multipliers your CPU has been running at. If you can see that it has dropped way down and got stuck there, that's throttling.

Using ThrottleStop is not rocket science. Run the built in benchmark to put some load on your CPU and watch your temperatures and what happens to the multiplier while testing.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but isn't there a way to tell before I buy which models have that throttling? There's a lot of the TimelineX models at Newegg.ca. None of them have user reviews there, and there don't seem to be any reviews elsewhere either for the models listed on the Canadian Newegg.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but of these on Newegg.ca, is there any way to tell *before* I buy which, if any, are throttled?
