Honestly finding a laptop that can run Skyrim on ultra is abit of a challenge given the $800 budget.

If you can live with buying a used laptop playing on high isn't unrealistic.

You'll get lower frame rates than what's listed on notebookcheck.net simply because your procesor(the i7 2670qm) is inferior to the processor used in the tests(i7 3610qm).

There's not a ton of a difference between 2670 and 3210, maybe 10%.

No, the laptop you listed in the OP might get games done at medium/high. You aren't ever going to find a laptop powerful enough to handle Ultra settings in any game for under $800. A little over, you'll get closer, but for Ultra you need either a 7970m or a 680m. Sorry, man, laptops are behind. I should know, I game on one frequently.

I would honestly recommend this one on your budget, since it can perform at roughly 660m-like levels in CrossfireX mode for games that support it:

The Trinity APUs close the mobile CPU gap a lot, as the A10 runs at close to i5-3210m speeds and is a full quad core, which means it can handle multicore games better than the i5. Pack that in with CrossfireX and you have a budget mobile powerhouse... nothing like a good Clevo or Sager but you'll be kicking some arse.

630m cannot play games in Ultra. I know, I owned one. Mine had an i5-2450m CPU as well, and it could not handle Ultra. That video also looks awfully washed out, as if not everything was turned on so that is not Ultra. It also appeared to be running at roughly 15-20 FPS, which is not "running Ultra." That's called forcing it to do so and living with the crap it gives back. Mine looked better than that on High.

But you sound like you have already made up your mind. Get the laptop, it'll do you fine, but if you ever get frustrated when you get into an area covered in NPCs and you get trounced FPS-wise, don't say we didn't warn you.

I don't think you understand what I am saying. I saw that video of the i5 laptop playing on ultra, then I found the laptop I am asking about. Specs:

I think this laptop, with better specs than the one in the video, should be able to run ultra.

The one in the video only had Intel Core i5 2450M(2.50GHz), 4GB Memory, 500GB HDD 5400rpm, NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M 2GB and it was runnig Skyrim on ultra, but with only 15-25 fps.

It might have to do with the resolution that laptop is set too, the Acer you listed has a 1600x900 screen while the other one is only running at 1366x768 because its the 15" version of the same laptop, there it is easier to run higher details... you could run 1280x720 on the Acer though and get better frame rates...

If and WHEN I get another 17" Acer it will be the Acer Aspire V3-771G, but I KNOW that I've seen them with the Nvidia 650M for around $800 and I know that its better than the 640M so you might see if you can find a model with that GPU.

The 650M should be able to run games on high settings with the 720p resolution. Ultra is a stretch though... I don't think a GTX660M would run the game on Ultra, because its based on the desktop 640 core (GK107), and the desktop 640 core struggles on Ultra.

Skyrim is also a CPU dependent game, so in theory, Skyrim should run better on it, but the difference might be something like 2-5 fps at such low resolution.

based on everything I've been able to gather you should be able to average about 35 if you keep anti aliasing and ansio tropic filter off, if you run

Check this out, look at their settings for the low med high settings and then scroll down to the GT640M, it shows that it averages 31 FPS at 1366x768 with AA and AF set to MAX, so if you crank those down, I bet you will hit the numbers you want.

You could run the game at 1280x720 on high with NO AA or x2 AA on that laptop and it would still maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio and I bet it would play great!

That is to say, not everything on High, but maybe High details with some other things turned down.

Besides, the 771G is a GREAT laptop anyways, so you would still love it.

I've failed to be impressed with the GTX560M... the thing is basically a cut up Nvidia 550, at least, in the time period, when the 5870M was a cut up Juniper, it used less power... the 560M was under performing and used more power... its a shame really... and on a related note, I didn't like the 570M either...

I think nvidia's entry level cards FAIL to impress compared to what AMD can do... and this coming from a guy who needs CUDA for work and is an nVidia fan...

Keplar is a HUGE step in the right direction, but I think we really need to let prices stabilize...
