Adapter to computer wont work after plugging in external hard drive

Hello,
I plugged in a new extrrnal hard drive into my laptop and now both adaptors are dead. Everything was powered up for about 5 minutes then both cords went dead. Everything was plugged in properly. Is this just a coincidence or did the external hard drive short out both?
