adding ssd to lenovo y510p

I'm wondering if I can physically fit a 2.5" sad into a y510p with a msata to sata adapter.

I wanna create a raid so I want the other hdd in too.

There won't be room for it - just get an mSATA SSD.

There's no point in SSD RAID. It's already seriously fast, and you're just doubling the failure rates.

you can get a hard drive caddy that replaces the DVD drive that can hold another laptop hardive. I have the Lenovo ideapad Y510p and currently have a 240GB solid state drive as the main drive which has windows 8 and windows 7 installed on it on two different partitions. I then have the 1TB hard drive inside of the hard drive caddy which has several partitions. one for data (downloads, music, videos, documents, games, etc.). Another partitions is specifically for the Program Files (both the regular and x86 folders). I had to do some regedit stuff to get both Windows OS's to read those Program Files folders as if they were on the C: drive. Its not hard to do (if you want to know how to do it just ask and ill post a link to a good tutorial). Also on the 1TB i have several Linux operating systems installed (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, and Pear OS). Please feel free to ask me if your interested in setting things up the same way. Every OS runs extremely smoothly and boots in no time at all. Good luck. Do you know if it matters, speed or otherwise, to simply put a 2.5" SSD into the caddy, and let the 1TB stay where it's at? I've been trying to get a straight up answer from Lenovo support, but they seem unable to provide one for me.
Seeing since I'm considering this laptop, the make-or-break point will be whether installing an SSD using a caddy placing in in the ultrabay will actually work

Should be no difference, because that's running off a Haswell chipset with 6x6Gb/s SATA ports.

My Lenovo y510p has dual graphics cards (which is sick btw) and I got the one without an Msata because it was about $200 cheaper and i thought hey i can put in my own. Well it didnt come with the actual Msata plug in it... it was not soldered in. So i bought a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro and use it in the regular Hard drive slot.

If I were you I would simply clone the drive to your SSD. This way you can keep your Win 8 License. I did not do this and screwed up the licensing. Another awesome trick I do on my desktop, which is setup as follows
128GB OCZ SSD 64GB for OS/Programs, 64GB is used by Intel IRST to accelerate my HDD which basically makes it into a Hybrid drive but way faster
1.5TB Seagate HDD

(On the Y510P i believe it is still possible to accelerate your HDD, but you may not want to for lack of space, but its a good thing to know how to do. In order to set the above up you need to have windows on a seperate HDD (probably a USB in this case) and set up the acceleration because it cannot be done on a drive that windows is using and wipes everything on the drive.)

I am now running out of room on my 64GB of OS/Programs so any big programs I simply cut the Program Files folder for the program to my 1.5TB HDD and use Symbolic links to the root of my HDD. BOOM freed up a bunch of room on my SSD.

So you can clone your Hard drive that came in your Y510P and then use Symbolic links to put any big files on your HDD.

As for Linux IDK. It should be very simple, just boot to a usb installer and select which drive you want. With windows 8 it might be complicated to get SafeBoot to like your install but it should work. Do some google searches on installing linux on a win 8 laptop.


EDIT: as for the SSD being slower in the Caddy I highly doubt it will be slower. A PCI 2.0 slot has a transfer rate of 5 GT/s (http/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.0) which is most likely comparable to the ultrabay slot (they both are used to attach Graphics cards) and the ultrabay has the cabability of running a 750M, That 750M will work that Ultrabay slot way more then any of todays HDD/SSD's will. IMHO. here (http/datacenterswitching.blogspot.com/2010/12/gbs-gbs-and-gts.html) And a SATA 3 slot is 6Gb/s, so it might be a litte slower but its not gonna matter

I replaced the 1TB HD with a 450GB HD with windows 7 installed. I am struggling some to get my drivers installed (seperate issue) I would like to replace the seperate storage (think its like 23 GB large) with a board (dont know what its called) with one that has at least 300 GB so I can run windows 8. Or, I could have windows 8 and windows 7 run off the 1 TB drive as you have done with both OS's reading programs and files as being native. Having accomplished that speaks high of your tech skills. Please elaborate how to achieve this.

Hey guys, I have lenovo y510p and on it I have a 250 GB Samsung SSD 850 Evo plugged-in in place of my 1TB Hard drive that came with the laptop. I have cloned the Hard drive to SSD and everything is working fine, but while I am trying to insert the 1TB hard drive in the DVD drive slot using a HDD caddy, nothing is happening. The laptop doesn't detect 1TB hard drive. I went through 4 HDD caddy from different vendors but I got no luck. The small blue LED on the bezels of these caddys do light up but nothing is detected in the laptop.
So am I missing something in this picture? Is there any feature that my laptop might not have which is causing the issue?
