Hey guys,

I need some advice on mics. I'm a casual gamer who also does a fair amount of skype calls and such. I need to get a new mic because my headset is getting really old and is breaking apart. I have a nice pair of shure headphones I love and would rather use those instead of a headset. My two options right now are a antlion modmic or an at2020 usb mic. I kind of like the idea of not having a mic stuck to the headphones and just having it on my desk, but I'm not sure if it will cancel out the fan noise properly. Keep in mind I would be probably 2 feet away from the mic if it was on my desk. Which option would provide a cleaner/crisper sound?

Also, if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thanks!

the at2020usb will offer superior audio quality than a modmic but also is more expensive as well.

you might not be aware of the atr2500 which is a mic by AT about 75% the quality level of the at2020usb and about midway between the modmic and 2020 in price.

both AT's are cardioid pickup pattern so will tend to ignore sound from behind them. To isolate them from vibration it is suggested to have a shock mount as well as a pop filter if you intend to have it close to you. the modmic is an omnidirectional which means it picks up sound from all directions however does have a noise cancelling feature.

though i'd suggest watching a few more videos since they may perform a bit differently for different users.

if you want convenience: modmic
if you want great audio quality: at2020usb with shockmount or boom
if you want low priced good bargain: atr2500 with shockmount

also of note: the blue yeti is comparable to the 2020 but with a few more pickup patterns. the snowball is worse than the 2500 but cheaper and a good budget choice however users often complain about low volume.
