I've been reading up on the successes and failures of unlocking the 5th and 6th cores of the x4 960T.

Some people say the unlock rate (successful) is very good, while others say it is around ~30-35%.

I was wondering what the users at Tom's had to say about this.

Its the CPU's the 960T is the Thuban (6 core) with 2 cores locked down. Some have been locked down from full working 6 cores to meet demand others have been die harvested, where some 6 cores were found to have faulty cores so rather than toss them away they disabled 2 cores and sold as stable 4 core chips.

Theres no way to tell if yours was a die harvest or just locked to meet demand so its random if you end up with a stable 6 core unlock.

*edit to add* And yes also the user needs a motherboard that supports core unlocking.

Sorry to break the combo but my friends 960T failed to unlock. But hey, from this thread it seems the success rate is quite high. It's completely pot luck, just pray you get a unlockable chip!

My 960T unlocked for me. I'm running at 3.6ghz 1.360v. It dose get hot though even with an after market cooler. It easily gets into the high 50's with prime 95. I start losing one of the 2 unlocked cores at that temp.

I have just unlocked mine last Oct 5. Hurried up going home late that night as excited I am to try my first unlock, I did it pretty quick through the CMOS set up

Actually I already have FX-8120 and teh 960T was just an expensive workaround used to update the BIOS of my Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 mobo, that is supposed to be FX-ready out-of-the-box. So now sitting idle in my room and needing some cash, I put the 960T up for sale and after a few weeks, I decided to unlock the hidden cores to give the processor a better value and saleabilty. Thereafter, I reverted to FX-8120 without doing some testings and harnessing the power of the unlocked 960T even for a day or few hours at least. Nevertheless though, Windows 8 x64 user index showed me 7.5 and when compared to the FX-8120's 7.6 index, not quite a distant comparison yet tells better value per money (at least as Windows 8 index tells me so)

The general consensus is the rate is quite good but there are always ones where they don't unlock. I would expect it to be above 50%. Hard for people to get a statistic like this unless they have numbers from AMD or they buy 1000+ cpus and test them.
