I am neither French or Irish, but the only thing that needs to be discussed here is that professional sports need to allow referees access to video replay. It is implemented in all 3 major sports in the US, and there is special rules to allow when and where it is able to be used. Professional sports have so much riding on them, that it is a shame that it falls on one pair of eyes to make the proper call (assuming one ref is close to the goal on a massive soccer field). Aside from the money aspect of this, when a countrys pride is at stake and a chance to compete in the major world championships, they have to make sure the right calls are made. Even if it only is used for goals, that is more than adequate.

Cut off Ireland from the internet. Don't they know that shouldn't mess with Wikipedia?

We'll miss Jane but that's a small price to pay to keep Wikipedia running. Besides, it might persuade Jane to join us on the civilized continents (N. America or Europe)

Soccer (or football for you darn foreigners) has a huge playing field but is only covered by three refs. Football (or american football for you foreigners) has 7, baseball has 5 (7 during the playoffs, lot of good they did, Mauer's hit was IN!). How three refs can be expected to see everything is beyond me. They either need more refs (like dedicated goal refs), or replay.

But then again, I thought they did have replay. It wasn't until after the in-stadium video of Zidane's infamous headbutt did the ref pull out the red-card.

Heck, there were lots of stories here in the U.S. about the New Mexico women's soccer player who was beating up the other team pretty severely, and she only got a yellow card. Had there been enough refs, she would have been red-carded for sure. Soccer needs more refs!!!

Oh, and are we only hearing this cause Jane's from Ireland? Wikipedia gets defaced pretty much anytime anything is in the news.

I think a camera referee should be implemented in all sports, How many times have you seen the referees in the NBA fail at their job, when the ref across the court calls the foul and the one next to the players doesn't do anything, or when the ball goes out of bounds and the ref next to the ball looks at the ref on the other side for the call.

refs are flawed and there needs to be a fail safe. I think all games should then be review afterward and if the ref misses or calls BS calls he should be fined or suspended.

My hate just come from the stingy bastards in the NBA who can't even do their jobs right.

A few comments on this:

1) Jane, I feel your pain. As a citizen of another "soccer crazy" country, I know how big a deal it is to go to the World Cup for most countries of the world (USA not included). Congratulations on keeping the article so impartial, as another commenter mentioned.
2) Yes, FIFA should implement some sort of video review, at least for such important matches as these. The system used in rugby, for instance, would be a good example
3)
Diego Maradona tweeted at the French player, "I know how it feels! See you in South Africa."
Hmmm, are you sure about that? Let's just say that I seriously doubt that Maradona uses Tweeter, much less to send a message to Thierry Henry.
And yes, he did score an illegal goal against England in 1986 but he also scored the best goal in World Cup history ... in that very same game! Since the link that mandigol posted doesn't work, here's another one:

4) Soccer has had a number of these controversies over time, it's unfortunately nothing new. In fact the goal the gave England its only World Cup so far, in 1966, doesn't really look like it was a goal at all. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__MJV11nRqU

I wish Ireland best of luck in Brazil 2014, I have no doubts they'll qualify for it.

No tech. Referees make the game more interesting. It's like uneven field. You have to compensate.

Hockey has video replay. But on world championship (if I'm not mistaken) our goalie was fauled by canadian player and it resulted in a goal - referee didn't see, didn't hapen (no help you could see it in TV many times over). In another match we scored goal against russia with six players on ice. No help for russia either. :)

So video is perfect, but you would have to analyze everything from all angles in real time.

Nothing of this would have happened if the french keeper didn't get excluded in the match against Serbia for no good reason. We wouldn't have lose the match and wouldn't have to go into playoffs.

And for Hellwig who thinks he's so clever, soccer has 5 referees.

In the Rugby World Cup final, there was a moment when England thought they had scored a try, but it was ruled out after a FULL 5 MINUTES of painstakingly going through the video replay, and they deemed that the guy's foot had gone over the side-line a split second before the ball was put down.
All I'm saying is if they can do it for rugby, why not for football.

In a game where there is so much money involved, there can only be two reasons not to have extra help for the referee: 1) Stupid Nostalgia or 2) Being Corrupt. I don't think the FIFA is stupid.

It's highly likely Maradona has someone tweeting for him. Tons of sports stars do. I was just pointing out that not everyone was hurling abuse at Henry. :)

A little out of topic but,

Why do some of the hard core fans of America football ridicule soccer, when "soccer" is originally and aptly named "football". You know because you actually use your foot to move the ball. Why is it then that American football is called as such, when 90% of the time players are holding it with their hands. (Shouldn't it be called handball then?)

Just a thought....

[citation][nom]invlem[/nom]One of the reasons I like soccer is because the game keeps moving all the time, half of the other professional sports you spend most of the game in time outs and the like. Video playback just means more time outs and less continuous play.If they can implement it without breaking the flow of the game though, I'm all for it, I just don't want to see refs standing around a TV[/citation]

Sure it keeps moving, but no one ever has control of the ball! It just gets kicked back and forth and cleared from one side of the field to the next until someone makes a mistake or falls on one side of the field and let's up an opportunity to score.

This article and the responses to it show exactly why they won't bring in video replay.
For a yank-centric tech website to even mention a non-US sport is an uncommon affair and for it to garner the amount of feedback this has is almost unprecedented. Nothing causes debate like controversy and incidents like these create more press coverage than almost anything else. How many papers get sold or page hits get reported when a big thing like this happens ? As always, follow the money.

Remember, it's only bad PR if they get your name wrong.
