I think your question would be better answered if you indicated
what you usually photograph and what your budget is.

(I have six lenses.. All Canon)

EF 17-40L
EF 28-105
EF 100-300
EF 100-400L
EF 50mm f/1.4
EF 100mm f/2.8

Still saving for the EF 500mm f/4

Jim,

How do you like the 100-400L. I'm thinking of buying one in the next couple
of months. I want to shoot some auto racing and my daughters rowing events.

I have collected a 10-22 F/3.5-4.5 USM, a 24-70 F/2.8 L USM and a
70-200 F/4 L USM--so far. All are very good lenses, especially for
zooms. The 10-22 is a very fun lens, bright, sharp, contrasty, almost a
match for the 24-70 optically. This set covers the necessary focal
length range accessible by zooms.
